Governments face a continuing challenge in directly countering false information both online and off. Effective communication is a key tool in the government’s toolkit, and yet it remains a struggle for many countries. Governments have not historically been good story tellers, as official messaging focusses more on fact that emotion. More importantly, governments’ tendency towards secrecy or hesitance to share unvetted information can leave an information void that malign actors can exploit.
This is changing, with more governments adopting strategic communications approaches. For example, developing counter narratives to fight the draw of violent extremists’ recruitment materials or using fact checking or verified information methods to counter false or manipulated media.
