With COVID-19 Worsening, Thailand Targets ‘Fake News’ | Foreign Policy

Over the last 30 days, Thailandā€™s COVID-19 cases have more thanĀ tripledĀ in the wake of a disappointing vaccine rollout, accompanied byĀ bodies in the street, aĀ violent crackdown on protests, andĀ chilling attacksĀ on civil society. In response, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-chaā€™s military government took on the obvious culprit: the pressā€”more specifically, ā€œfake news.ā€

ā€œDistorting information to cause a misunderstanding about the emergency situation, which may eventually affect state security,ā€ is prohibited, theĀ government announcedĀ in theĀ Royal Thai Government Gazette, an official public journal, on Thursday, adding that internet service providers should immediately suspend violatorsā€™ accounts.
