Anmol Alphonso is a senior fact-checker with BOOM, India.
BOOM is India’s leading fact-checking platform, dedicated to fighting misinformation and promoting a safer online space with verified facts. Since 2018, Anmol Alphonso has been fact-checking misinformation circulating on Indian social media, primarily on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X. He has written fact-checks on a wide range of false and misleading claims, including communal claims and fact-checking statements made by politicians. Before joining BOOM, he interned as a fact-checker at IndiaSpend and worked as a reporting intern at The Times of India, The Indian Express, and Mid-Day, where he covered civic issues in Mumbai. He holds a postgraduate diploma in journalism from St Paul’s Institute of Communication Education, Mumbai, and a Bachelor of Computer Applications degree from Christ College, Pune.
At the invitation of Prof. Dr. Sahana Udupa (Ethnology, LMU), he was a 2024-2025 Visiting Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies (CAS), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and part of the CAS Research Group Below the Radar? Messaging Apps, Encryption and the Enticement of Extreme Speech.
