European Union officials are threatening to regulate how social-media platforms such as Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. moderate content, increasing pressure on the companies to remove bots and fake posts and accounts.
The European Commission, the union’s executive decision-making body, is discussing with member countries whether to create a law to require social-media companies to remove disinformation. It expects to reach a decision early next year, officials told journalists last week.
