A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine will convene a workshop to discuss whether protections provided to Internet-based technology companies and social media platforms under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 should be reconsidered in light of increasing online misinformation and abuse. The workshop will examine the legal and economic rationale for Section 230; review court decisions relevant to Section 230; discuss proposals for revisions to Section 230, and explore technological approaches that might allow for a more responsible management of third party Internet content.
