Keynote: Free Speech in the Age of Misinformation | Hart House at the University of Toronto

This year, the Committee’s Keynote event addresses pathways for the preservation of free speech while mediating the harmful effects of misinformation in our present societies.

Freedom of speech has long been considered a bastion of liberal, open societies. However, in the present era, it is arguably no longer information that is scarce, but our ability to process it. Misinformation, trolling, political division, and mistrust in institutions have led us to ask: how can we, as proponents of free speech in its ideal sense, manage a marketplace of ideas riddled with lies?

In this event, we bring together an American former ACLU president and law professor with a Canadian digital privacy expert and political scientist, to delve into an interdisciplinary analysis of the present and future of free speech, liberal discourse, and the pursuit of truth in North America.
