Resilience: Muting and Resisting Conspiracy Theories

This chapter examines societal resilience to conspiracy theories by reviewing what is known about muting their effects and resisting their spread. It argues that conspiracy theories pose a growing and unpredictable risk because they emerge rapidly around new threatening events, mobilize diverse audiences, and are highly resistant to factual correction. Reviewing research across politics, public health, security, and social conflict, the chapter documents the serious harms associated with widespread conspiracy beliefs, including polarization, violence, distrust of institutions, and loss of life. It then evaluates countermeasures at two levels. Individual-level interventions—fact-checking, priming, inoculation, education, and social exposure—are shown to have limited and fragile effects, with inoculation offering the strongest but least practical protection. Inter-individual interventions—algorithmic moderation, bot detection, monitoring superspreaders, and platform governance—are more effective but remain partial and adaptive targets in an ongoing arms race. The chapter concludes that no single solution exists: resilience requires sustained platform interventions combined with long-term educational strategies and continued research into the dynamics of conspiracy theorizing.
