Yellow fever outbreaks and Twitter: Rumors and misinformation

Yellow fever is a re-emerging viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. It is caused by the yellow fever virus, a member of the family Flaviviridae, which is endemic in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America.1 A recent yellow fever outbreak was detected in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in late 2015.1 From December 2015-October 2016, 7,334 suspected cases were registered, among them 962 laboratory-confirmed cases and 137 deaths (case fatality rate: 14.2%).
