The Honesty Crisis Surrounding Deepfakes

Deepfakes involve taking an audio or video recording, and using AI technology, manipulating the content in some way to make things happen which did not actually happen in the original recording. Surprisingly, no one has yet explored how deepfakes strike at the heart of honesty. This chapter argues that creating and sharing deepfakes is typically dishonest, and they have sparked an honesty crisis with implications for politics, education, pornography, and so much more. The dangers of deepfakes are significant, and there needs to be more enforcement across the board to signal and in some cases prohibit their use.
