Talking about Fact-Checking with Renee DiResta | Galley by CJR

Sometimes it seems as though disinformation is rampant, not just on social media platforms, but in the news environment in general. And that has highlighted the practice of fact-checking as a standalone practice, done by journalists dedicated to the task. How did we get here? And what are the best practices when doing that kind of fact-checking in a chaotic, real-time news environment? Can we even say that fact-checking is working at all, in the sense of correcting people’s impressions of misinformation?

These are just some of the questions that we wanted to look at this week on Galley, so we’ve invited a group of experts and practitioners to talk with us about them. Our guests have included Kelly Weill of The Daily Beast, former Snopes managing editor Brooke Binkowski, Alexios Mantzarlis of the Google News Lab, Jonathan Albright of the Tow Center’s Digital Forensics research project, and Gordon Crovitz from NewsGuard, among others. Those interviews are here: https://galley.cjr.org/public
