SUMMARY:China’s AI strategy and its impact on the global information space | EU Disinfo Lab
DESCRIPTION:Can European software built on cheap Chinese AI models be trusted? \nAs open-source model families like Alibaba’s Qwen surge in global popularity\, an increasing number of international developers are quietly integrating them into their tech stacks. However\, this cost-effective accessibility may come with a significant hidden vulnerability: the systematic embedding of Chinese propaganda into core AI architectures. \nDrawing directly from a breakthrough report for the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency\, co-author Alex Colville examines the geopolitical strategy behind China’s ambitions\, Xi Jinping’s doctrine of controlling foundational AI development as a means of shaping global technological standards and international information ecosystems\, as well as its use for Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) purposes. \nThe session breaks down specific PRC tactics on how state-approved narratives are encoded into large language models (LLMs)\, dispelling common misconceptions about censorship and propaganda. It will also examine the practical steps that European policymakers\, developers\, and other stakeholders can take to mitigate FIMI-related risks associated with Chinese AI models and safeguard information integrity. \nNote: Event details are listed in CET (UTC +1)

SUMMARY:World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2026
DESCRIPTION:The WSIS Forum serves as the central multistakeholder convening platform mandated to advance the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines and support global digital cooperation. Anchored in the renewed UNGA mandate\, the Forum brings together governments\, the private sector\, civil society\, technical communities\, academia\, youth\, and international organizations in a uniquely inclusive environment for dialogue\, collaboration\, and action. \nAs part of the WSIS+20 review process\, the United Nations General Assembly recognized the central role of the WSIS Forum as a global platform for advancing the WSIS vision. Through resolution A/RES/80/173\, the General Assembly acknowledged the work of ITU\, in collaboration with UNESCO\, UNCTAD and UNDP\, in establishing the annual WSIS Forum. \nThe Forum remains the principal mechanism for reviewing\, gathering multistakeholder input and advancing the WSIS Action Lines\, including their annual roadmaps. International Telecommunication Union leads the coordination of the Event and it is co organized by ITU\, UNESCO\, UNDP\, and UNCTAD\, in partnership with more than fifty United Nations entities\, ensuring a coherent system wide approach to the follow up of the WSIS outcomes. \nWSIS Forum is co-hosted by ITU and Switzerland. \nA defining component of the Forum is its High Level Track\, which convenes ministers\, regulators\, chief executives\, civil society heads\, mayors\, ambassadors and heads of UN agencies. The ministerial roundtables provide an opportunity for Member States to articulate national digital priorities\, exchange policy experiences\, and identify areas for collective action\, reinforcing the Forum’s role as the interface between policy level commitments and operational implementation. \nThe WSIS Forum has established itself as a global hub for innovation\, emerging trends\, and forward looking discussions. Each year\, it showcases new developments in artificial intelligence\, frontier connectivity\, digital public infrastructure\, cybersecurity\, digital inclusion\, and multilingual digital ecosystems. At the same time\, it provides a structured space to examine emerging risks\, such as online safety challenges\, misinformation\, data governance concerns\, and widening digital divides — enabling multistakeholder responses to evolving digital realities. \nLooking ahead\, WSIS Forum 2026 will take place from 6 to 10 July in Geneva\, hosted at ITU Headquarters from 6–7 July and at Palexpo from 8–10 July. As the first Forum convened after the WSIS+20 UNGA review\, it will play a vital role in supporting Member States as they begin implementing commitments set out in the December resolution. The 2026 edition will feature an expanded High Level Track\, strengthened ministerial participation\, the WSIS Prizes 2026\, thematic exhibitions\, and a programme shaped through the Open Consultation Process.

SUMMARY:A Materialist Critique of Technofascism | ECPR
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Möllers parses the current debate on technofascism(s) to develop a materialist understanding of technofascist formations from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and anti-colonial perspectives. She demonstrates that a focus on materiality highlights both the ordinariness and global/planetary dimensions of contemporary technofascist formations. She argues that a materialist understanding of technofascist formations clarifies that the struggle against them must not be limited to resisting Big Tech but must encompass the abolition of all infrastructures of state violence.\n\nNorma Möllers is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Queen’s University\, where she researches and teaches on technologies of state violence. Her forthcoming book Against Bias\, available open access with MIT Press\, is an ethnography of how computer scientists make algorithmic surveillance technology. Her current research focuses on the relationship between algorithmic warfare and digital capitalism. At the moment\, she is thinking a lot about the responsibility of intellectuals in times of fascism and what we can do to support the collective struggle.\n\nNote: Event details are listed in BST (UTC + 1).

SUMMARY:AI Real Talk: Spotting AI Slop with Pangram's CEO | Hacks/Hackers
DESCRIPTION:The company Pangram has built the leading product for detecting if purportedly human-written words were actually generated by machines. Their work was among the first to publicly prove the novel “Shy Girl” was largely written by AI\, and the book was eventually pulled from store shelves. Pangram has also identified reams of AI-assisted content on legitimate news sites\, and it’s tracking the continued growth of machine-generated text that’s now at nearly 10 percent of all articles … and rising. They have also released an open version of their AI-detection model. \nPangram CEO Max Spero — or the “slop janitor” as he has called himself — will join us for the latest Hacks/Hackers AI Real Talk to speak about his company’s work\, how it does what it does and why it matters. As usual\, we’ll take lots of community questions too. \nJoin us for the latest installment in Hacks/Hackers’ AI Real Talk series. \n\nClick here to learn more and to register for the event. \nNote: Event details listed in EDT.

SUMMARY:Behind the screen: AI slop\, young children\, and the profit problem | Brookings
DESCRIPTION:AI slop—low-quality\, mass-produced content created by generative AI—is increasingly permeating the digital environments that young children encounter during what is the most critical period for their development and lifelong well-being. As concerns grow about the potential effects of AI slop on young children\, questions are also emerging about the incentives that drive its creation and distribution. What constitutes safe and unsafe media for young children\, and what should caregivers understand about what is happening behind the screen? \nOn July 18\, the Center for Universal Education at Brookings will host a conversation to examine the effects of AI slop on young children’s learning\, development\, and well-being\, as well as the incentives driving its production. As the third event in the Generation AI Starts Early webinar series\, the discussion will bring together perspectives from health\, media\, and policy to explore what AI-generated content means for young children\, caregivers\, policymakers\, and the broader media ecosystem. \nThe Generation AI Starts Early series brings together leading experts in early childhood development and related fields to examine how AI is entering children’s everyday lives and what this could mean for their development and future trajectories. The series also explores the guardrails\, policies\, and design principles needed to ensure that\, as babies and children grow up in an AI world\, the human relationships and experiences that underpin healthy development remain central. \nViewers can submit questions via email to events@brookings.edu. \nClick here to learn more and register to attend. Note: Event details listed in EDT (UTC-4).
