SUMMARY:Election Disinformation: Using Media Literacy to Spot It and Stop It | PEN America
DESCRIPTION:Join PEN America for a live and interactive media literacy training on Thursday\, September 10 at 6:30pm ET to discuss best practices and defense strategies to combat election disinformation this fall. \nDuring this 90-minute training\, participants will review the fundamentals of disinformation\, how to better identify manipulated content\, and will leave equipped with PEN America’s Media Literacy Toolkit\, which provides practical tools for how to identify false information and prevent its spread. The facilitator\, Nora Benavidez\, director of PEN America’s U.S. Free Expression Programs\, has baked in timely and contextualized examples to make sense of misinformation in the context of the upcoming election and will build on our ongoing media literacy workshops and panels with local journalists. SUMMARY:MisinfoCon Webinar on Police Misinformation | MisinfoCon & MuckRock
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and disinformation originating from law enforcement sources\, which has lately included Antifa raids\, brick piles\, poisoned milkshakes and more\, has sparked considerable interest in the past few months. But journalists who cover the police say this is common — even the rule. \nWhen police in Buffalo\, N.Y.\, pushed a 75-year-old man to the ground at a George Floyd protest\, the incident was filmed by a journalist\, posted online\, and spread widely by an audience hungry for this kind of news. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Combatting COVID-19 misinformation with machine learning (VB Live) | VentureBeat
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation around COVID-19 is driving human behavior across the world. Here in the information age\, sensationalized clickbait headlines are crowding out actual fact-based content\, and\, as a result misinformation spreads virally. Conversations within small communities become the epicenter of false information\, and that misinformation spreads as people talk\, both online and off. As the number of misinformed people grow\, this “infodemic” grows. \nThe spread of misinformation around COVID-19 is especially problematic\, because it could overshadow the key messaging around safety measures from public health and government officials. \nIn an effort to counter misinformed narratives in central and west Africa\, Novetta Mission Analytics (NMA) is working with Africa CDC (Center for Disease Control) to discover and identify narratives and behavior patterns around the disease\, says David Cyprian\, product owner at Novetta. And machine learning is key. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Jill Lepore Discusses “If Then” with SSRC board member danah boyd | Data & Society
DESCRIPTION:Data & Society presents its first-ever collaboration with Brooklyn Public Library in this online talk with historian Jill Lepore\, who will discuss her new book If Then\, a story of “trying to understand human behavior via algorithm\, and the corrosive consequences of trying to hack democracy.” (Booklist). This talk is hosted by Data & Society Founder and President danah boyd\, who also serves on the board of the Social Science Research Council. \nThe Simulmatics Corporation\, launched during the Cold War\, mined data\, targeted voters\, manipulated consumers\, destabilized politics\, and disordered knowledge―decades before Facebook\, Google\, and Cambridge Analytica. Lepore\, best-selling author of These Truths\, came across the company’s papers in MIT’s archives and set out to tell this forgotten history\, the long-lost backstory to the methods\, and the arrogance\, of Silicon Valley. \nFounded in 1959 by some of the nation’s leading social scientists―“the best and the brightest\, fatally brilliant\, Icaruses with wings of feathers and wax\, flying to the sun”―Simulmatics proposed to predict and manipulate the future by way of the computer simulation of human behavior. In summers\, with their wives and children in tow\, the company’s scientists met on the beach in Long Island under a geodesic\, honeycombed dome\, where they built a “People Machine” that aimed to model everything from buying a dishwasher to counterinsurgency to casting a vote. Deploying their “People Machine” from New York\, Washington\, Cambridge\, and even Saigon\, Simulmatics’ clients included the John F. Kennedy presidential campaign\, the New York Times\, the Department of Defense\, and others: Simulmatics had a hand in everything from political races to the Vietnam War to the Johnson administration’s ill-fated attempt to predict race riots. The scientists of Simulmatics believed they had invented “the A-bomb of the social sciences.” They did not predict that it would take decades to detonate\, like a long-buried grenade. But\, in the early years of the twenty-first century\, that bomb did detonate\, creating a world in which corporations collect data and model behavior and target messages about the most ordinary of decisions\, leaving people all over the world\, long before the global pandemic\, crushed by feelings of helplessness. This history has a past; If Then is its cautionary tale. \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History and Affiliate Professor of Law at Harvard University. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker\, and host of the podcast\, The Last Archive. Her many books include These Truths: A History of the United States (2018)\, an international bestseller and was named one of Time magazine’s top ten non-fiction books of the decade. (A recent essay considers responses to the book.) Her latest book\, IF THEN: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future\, is available on September 15\, 2020. \ndanah boyd is founder and president of Data & Society\, a partner researcher at Microsoft Research\, and a visiting professor at New York University. Her research is focused on making certain that society has a nuanced understanding of the relationship between technology and society\, especially as issues of inequity and bias emerge. More on boyd here. \nPlease register for this free Zoom event. Registered audience members will receive a Zoom link prior to the event. If Then can be ordered online from our partner Greenlight Bookstore for in-store pickup or direct-to-home shipping here. \nDocumentation\, including video and resources\, will be available on Data & Society’s website afterwards.

On Episode 22 of “The Future of Democracy\,” we’ll talk with Alondra Nelson\, president of the Social Science Research Council\, a nonprofit\, interdisciplinary research network. She’ll share her expertise as a leading thinker on tech’s intersection with equity.\n————- \nThe Future of Democracy\, formerly called VISION\, is a weekly Knight Foundation show about the trends\, ideas and disruptions changing the face of our democracy. SUMMARY:Fighting Election Disinformation with First-Time Voters | PEN America
DESCRIPTION:Join PEN America on Wednesday\, September 30 at 6:30pm ET for a live and interactive media literacy workshop that will focus on examples of mis/disinformation targeting first-time voters and helpful strategies that new voters can employ to guard against misleading election information and cast their ballots safely and confidently. \nVoting for the first time can be nerve-racking\, and it’s hard enough navigating through the slew of information about how\, when\, and where to vote in a normal election year. Because 2020’s is everything but a “normal” election season\, PEN America is here to work with first-time voters on spotting and stopping mis/disinformation that we are seeing or expect to encounter in the following weeks leading up to Election Day. We’ll discuss how to debunk mail-in ballot issues\, review registration deadlines\, and map out which states are likely to have longer delays. We will learn to apply PEN America’s Media Literacy Toolkit to the influx of false content about the election and voting process so participants are prepared to discern fact from falsehood and vote securely for the first time. \n[…]\n\n
