SUMMARY:The Executive Order on Platforms and Online Speech: Stanford’s Cyber Policy Center Responds | FSI Cyber
DESCRIPTION:“On Thursday\, President Trump signed an executive order threatening to revoke CDA 230 protections\, which would expose social media companies to increased liability for content that is posted on their sites. This comes on the heels of Twitter\, last week\, fact-checking two misleading tweets from the president about mail-in voting. Critics of the executive order say the White House is overstepping its authority\, and cannot limit the legal protections that social media companies currently hold under federal law. \nJoin the Stanford Cyber Policy Center’s team Monday June 1 at 8AM PST for President Trump’s Executive Order on Platforms and Online Speech: Stanford’s Cyber Policy Center Responds\, with Nate Persily\, Faculty Co-Director of the Cyber Policy Center and Director of the Program on Democracy and the Internet; Daphne Keller\, Director for the Program on Platform Regulation and former associate general counsel for Google; Alex Stamos\, Director of the Cyber Center’s Internet Observatory and former Chief Security Officer at Facebook; Marietje Schaake\, Policy Director for the Cyber Policy Center and former Member of EU Parliament; and Eileen Donahoe\, Executive Director of the Global Digital Policy Incubator and former US Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Counsel\, in conversation with Cyber Center Director Kelly Born.”

SUMMARY:Disinformation Systems During the Fight for Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:“On Twitter and Facebook\, hundreds of posts are circulating saying that George Floyd is not actually dead. \nConspiracy theorists are baselessly arguing that George Soros\, the billionaire investor and Democratic donor\, is funding the spreading protests against police brutality. \nAnd conservative commentators are asserting with little evidence that antifa\, the far-left antifascism activist movement\, coordinated the riots and looting that sprang from the protests. \nUntruths\, conspiracy theories and other false information are running rampant online as the furor over Mr. Floyd\, an African-American man who was killed last week in police custody in Minneapolis\, has built. \n— The New York Times \nToday’s information environment is more chaotic and easier to manipulate than ever before\, which has been surfacing through disinformation around the current Black Lives Matter protests. Craig Silverman’s new book\, Verification Handbook: A definitive guide to verifying digital content for emergency coverage\, equips journalists with the knowledge to investigate social media accounts\, bots\, private messaging apps\, information operations\, deep fakes\, as well as other forms of disinformation and media manipulation. \nJoin us on Thursday\, June 4th at 3pm ET for a conversation on tools\, techniques and step-by-step guidelines for how to deal with user-generated content (UGC) during this turbulent time. Craig Silverman will be joined by Gabrielle Lim to lead a discussion and take your questions on the issues we’re currently facing and where we go from here. \nPlease RSVP below and we’ll be in touch with information on joining the livestream.”

SUMMARY:The COVID-19 pandemic: Big tech\, privatization\, surveillance\, AI and the rush for data | REDE4BlackLives
DESCRIPTION:“Naomi Klein and LLana James lay out the epic stakes of the growing struggles around data\, technology\, AI and COVID-19. Power\, race(ism)\, and money shape every development related to big tech: who owns it\, how and why it gets used. What do we need to consider during the pandemic if privacy\, human rights and universal access to health care are to remain intact and sustainable post pandemic. \nWhat are the risks and benefits of adding (more) race-based data to an AI\, data-driven economy\, awash in a sea of algorithmic racism? Your electronic medical and health record (EMR/EHR) are being mined\, without your informed consent. Who benefits? What are the potential short and long-term implications? What supports and protections are needed? What questions should we be asking about data brokers\, public-private partnerships\, surveillance\, privatization and the unregulated rush for data in the midst of the pandemic. Facilitated by Rinaldo Walcott. Followed by question and answer.”

SUMMARY:ICWSM 2020
DESCRIPTION:“The International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) is a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to come together to share knowledge\, discuss ideas\, exchange information\, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This overall theme includes research in new perspectives in social theories\, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media. ICWSM is a singularly fitting venue for research that blends social science and computational approaches to answer important and challenging questions about human social behavior through social media while advancing computational tools for vast and unstructured data. \nICWSM\, now in its fourteenth year\, has become one of the premier venues for computational social science\, and previous years of ICWSM have featured papers\, posters\, and demos that draw upon network science\, machine learning\, computational linguistics\, sociology\, communication\, and political science. The uniqueness of the venue and the quality of submissions have contributed to a fast growth of the conference\, and a competitive acceptance rate around 20% for full-length research papers published in the proceedings by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). \nFor ICWSM-2020\, in addition to the usual program of contributed talks\, posters and demos\, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks from prominent scientists and technologists. Building on successes in previous years\, ICWSM-2020 will also hold a day of workshops and tutorials in addition to the main conference.”

SUMMARY:Online Event: "Lie Machines: How Disinformation Threatens Democracy and How to Save It" | NED
DESCRIPTION:“While disinformation is not new to politics\, today’s technologies enable political actors to manipulate the information ecosystem at scale and with great speed. Through massive networks of fake accounts\, junk news sites\, and the strategic use of conspiracy theories\, half-truths\, and falsehoods\, authoritarian regimes and others are suffocating and dividing the public square. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic\, authoritarian governments and illiberal actors are drawing on similar approaches to discredit democracy while shaping international understandings of their response to the disease. \nThese “lie machines” are aided by expanding troves of data on individuals and an information ecosystem that facilitates polarization\, outrage\, and social distrust. The net result of their efforts is deadly to democracy. A new book by Philip Howard\, director of the Oxford Internet Institute\, describes how these machines operate—and how they can be taken apart. \nFEATURING \nPhilip Howard\, Oxford Internet Institute \nLaura Rosenberger\, Alliance for Securing Democracy \nDaniel Arnaudo\, National Democratic Institute for International Affairs \nMODERATED BY \nShanthi Kalathil\, International Forum for Democratic Studies”

SUMMARY:Disinformation\, Digital Hate\, and Big Tech | NetGain
DESCRIPTION:“The proliferation of COVID-19 disinformation and misinformation on the internet has increased denial and uncertainty about the outbreak across the internet\, while hateful content and speech has further stoked xenophobia and racism. Moreover\, social media platforms from Facebook (including Instagram and Whatsapp) and Twitter to Google and YouTube\, platforms are facing increased pressure to quickly respond to disinformation\, fraud\, online hate during the pandemic. What is the state of COVID-19 related information and news on social media? And what are the platform companies doing to combat disinformation and other harms? \nThis webinar will bring together researchers focused on understanding the spread of disinformation and hateful speech\, along with journalists and advocates\, to discuss what is happening on social media and how tech companies and governments should address ‘information disorder’ moving forward.”

SUMMARY:Big Tech's Increasing Power | NetGain
DESCRIPTION:“The economic crisis caused by COVID-19 will further strengthen big tech’s hold over the economy and society\, without intervention. Already\, small businesses and retail outlets across the country are in a free fall as the result of social distancing measures\, leaving Amazon to gain an even larger share of the marketplace. Meanwhile\, local restaurants struggling to stay in business are now turning to online ordering and delivery apps\, like Grubhub\, that charge excessive fees and face little to no regulation. In addition\, journalism and news outlets also face increasing financial difficulties as ad dollars and subscriptions both decrease\, further diminishing revenues\, and making them even more dependent upon Facebook\, Google\, and Apple to provide financial support for their content. \nThis webinar will explore how the influence of big tech and digital platforms in the economy and our society is expanding in the wake of COVID-19\, and what governments should do to preserve competition in our markets and protect the public interest in this moment of significant disruption.”
