SUMMARY:Association of Internet Researchers Conference 2019 (#AoIR2019)
DESCRIPTION:“The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to announce Queensland University of Technology\, Brisbane\, Australia as the site of #AoIR2019. For only the second time in its history\, the AoIR conference will cross the equator and be held in the southern hemisphere\, returning to Brisbane and QUT where it was hosted in 2006. The conference takes place on 2-5 October 2019. \nTrust is one of the most critical issues of our time: trust in our fellow Internet users; trust in the information we encounter in our online environments; trust in the data we produce and in the data that are continuously produced about us; trust in the algorithms that process and evaluate these data; trust in those who create the digital content we consume; trust in platforms and intermediaries that maintain our online spaces and that manage and trade in these data; trust in our national and regional governments that engage citizens over the Internet; trust in grassroots\, social welfare and non-government organisations; trust in the regulatory bodies and political systems that are in charge of governing these systems of exchange. At every level\, and spurred on by a rise in extremism and increased suspicion of others\, our trust in the system is being challenged\, presenting challenges for existing institutions and the opportunity to imagine new ones. The 2019 conference of the Association of Internet Researchers addresses these questions of trust. The full Call for Proposals is here.“

SUMMARY:NULab Misinformation Speaker Series: Jaime Settle
DESCRIPTION:Event featured image\, but exclude link Event content \n\n“Please join us for a talk by Professor Jaime Settle\, William & Mary: “Frenemies: How Social Media Polarizes America” \nAbstract: Why do Americans have such animosity for people who identify with the opposing political party? In this book\, the author argues that in the context of increasing partisan polarization among American political elites\, the way we communicate on Facebook uniquely facilitates psychological polarization among the American public.Frenemies introduces the END Framework of social media interaction. END refers to a subset of content that circulates in a social media ecosystem: a personalized\, quantified blend of politically informative expression\, news\, and discussion seamlessly interwoven into a wider variety of socially informative content. Scrolling through the News Feed triggers a cascade of processes that result in negative attitudes about those who disagree with us politically. The inherent features of Facebook\, paired with the norms of how people use the site\, heighten awareness of political identity\, bias the inferences people make about others’ political views\, and foster stereotyped evaluations of the political out-group. \nBiography: Jaime Settle is the David and Carolyn Wakefield Term Associate Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary. She is a scholar of American political behavior with expertise in the fields of political psychology and communication. Settle’s research focuses on how political interactions—in both face-to-face and online contexts—affect the way individuals perceive conflict in their environment\, evaluate other people\, and engage within the political system. She integrates tools from other disciplines—such as behavior genetics\, psychophysiology\, and data science—to inform our approach in understanding key questions within political science. Settle has published 20 peer-reviewed manuscripts or chapters in venues such as Nature\, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, the American Journal of Political Science\, and the Journal of Politics. In 2018\, her first book Frenemies: How Facebook Polarizes America was published by Cambridge University Press and won a best book award from the Experiments in Politics section and an honorable mention from the Political Networks section of the American Political Science Association. She serves on the board of the American National Election Study and is an associate editor at the Journal of Experimental Political Science. Settle received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of Richmond and her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at San Diego. She is the director of the Social Networks and Political Psychology Lab and co-director of the Social Science Research Methods Center. \nCo-sponsored with the Department of Political Science and the Shorenstein Center. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but if you are not a member of the Northeastern community\, please email Sarah Connell (sa.connell[at]northeastern[dot]edu) to RSVP.” \n\n .tribe-events-single-event-description \n .tribe-events-cal-links \n Event meta

SUMMARY:Disinformation and Elections in East and South East Asia: Digital Futures and Fragile Democracies
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“A recent series of elections in Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Thailand\, the Philippines and indeed across Asia has highlighted the salience of digital media in political campaigns and insidious modes of electoral manipulation. This two-day workshop aims to gather evidence into the operations and impact of digital disinformation in the context of recent Asian elections. \nThe conference approaches Asia as a site in which disinformation in various digital and analog forms have not only deep local histories but also radical acceleration and innovation the likes of which have little to no precedent in advanced liberal democracies in the West. Many Asian countries lead in both scale and intensity of technological adoption and use while serving as “laboratories” for testing and experimentation by Big Tech firms\, with minimal oversight and accountability to the potentially grave consequences of algorithmic tweaks\, the dispersed labor of content moderation\, and new platform rollouts. Thus we seek to develop a framework that examines the social and political ramifications of this process beyond the region. \nThe two-day event aims for interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to thinking through issues of disinformation that draw from areas of sociology\, politics\, media and communication studies\, journalism studies\, critical legal studies\, information science\, and anthropology.” \n\n\n\n Event Listing Body \n\n Listing Hero Details \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Conference for Truth & Trust Online
DESCRIPTION:“The mission of the first conference on Truth and Trust Online (TTO) is to bring together people working on automated approaches to augment manual efforts on improving the truthfulness and trustworthiness of online communications. \nTruth and Trust Online is organised as a unique collaboration between practitioners\, technologists\, academics and platforms. This year’s conference will be taking place on October 4th and 5th 2019 at BMA House in London. \nTechnical and other experts from around the world will share\, discuss\, and collaborate on useful technical innovations\, because while trustworthy online spaces benefit everyone\, untrustworthy content and behaviour can divide\, confuse\, and cause real harm.”

SUMMARY:Harvard Workshop on Comparative Disinformation
DESCRIPTION:“From misleading news stories around the 2018 Brazil elections to a lynching linked to false social media messages in India in 2019\, the deluge of digital disinformation is affecting communications in many countries around the world. \nThe situation is particularly concerning in emerging democracies\, where availability and affordability of digital communication technologies have facilitated production and distribution of false or misleading digital content among populations with low levels of media and digital literacy. At the same time\, we are witnessing false narratives spreading across countries and across platforms often orchestrated by networks of operatives coordinating attacks internationally. \nWhile several academic workshops have been organized on the topic of disinformation\, little attention has been paid to the examination of disinformation from comparative and international perspectives. \nThe Workshop on Disinformation to be held at Harvard University in Cambridge\, MA on October 4\, 2019 will feature scholars from around the world discussing their research on the prevalence\, impact\, and diffusion of disinformation.”

SUMMARY:Using Tech For Good: A New Generation of Civic-Minded Technologists
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“Understanding technology and its implications is essential to creating a more just and equitable future. How do we ensure the public is better served by the design and implementation of policies and services which anticipate the implications of technology? How can we include the next generation of computer scientists\, information architects\, engineers\, data scientists\, and designers in policymaking and public service? \nThe Public Interest Technology University Network\, a partnership that unites 21 colleges and universities\, is working to address these very issues by building the nascent field of public interest technology and growing a new generation of civic-minded technologists. \nJoin us for the first annual convening of the Public Interest Tech University Network to find out more on how the network of partners from higher education\, philanthropy\, and public policy is building the public interest technology sector; hear from leaders and cultural luminaries on addressing the systemic inequality; and discover how you can use a career as a technologist for good.” \n\n\n\n Event Listing Body \n\n Listing Hero Details \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
