SUMMARY:Surveillance Capitalism\, Human Autonomy\, and You
DESCRIPTION:“Every time we search on a browser\, buy something online\, or post to our friends on social media\, we are leveraging free resources to save time and money. But our clicks and keystrokes also fuel a massive\, algorithm-powered industry that exploits our online experiences for profit. These dynamics are the focus of Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism\, a chilling expose of today’s digital economy. Zuboff details how data about our digital activities is used to create predictive models of our behavior\, and how a range of corporate entities manipulate that data for profit and power. Join us for this illuminating discussion about surveillance capitalism’s exploitation of human experience in the digital age and how\, according to Zuboff\, our privacy\, security\, and the very idea of free will are being undermined.”

SUMMARY:Reporting From the Front Lines of the Information Wars
DESCRIPTION:“Good journalism is no longer sufficient to combat the assault on truth and democracy. Media companies are striving to counter the threat of information warfare by working in new and different ways\, and to respond to the ethics challenges posed by this struggle. \nAt this exclusive event\, you’ll hear from journalists—including Daily Beast Editor Noah Schactman\, NPR Media Reporter David Folkenflik and Rappler co-founder Maria Ressa—about building credibility in the era of liars and leaks. You’ll dissect case studies with standards editors including The New York Times’ Phil Corbett and CNN’s Stephen Holmes. And you’ll better prepare for the future with insights from researchers\, security experts\, and big tech companies. \nJoin the Columbia Journalism Review\, the Poynter Institute\, and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism as we define the extent of this new information war and identify new best practices for media organizations. The event marks the formal launch of Columbia’s Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security and Poynter’s Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership.”

SUMMARY:The Web Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:“The Web Conference (formerly known as WWW conference) is a yearly international conference on the topic of the World Wide Web \nThe conference began in 1994 at CERN and is organized each year by a local team of volunteers in different parts of the world who come together to organize the conference in collaboration with the International World Wide Web Conferences Steering Committee (IW3C2). The Conference aims to provide the world with a premier forum for discussion and debate about the evolution of the Web\, the standardization of its associated technologies\, and the impact of those technologies on society and culture. The conference brings together researchers\, policy makers\, developers\, users and commercial ventures — indeed all those who are passionate about the Web and what it has to offer. \nIn 2019\, The Web Conference will be hosted in San Francisco\, California\, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Web. We come together on May 13-17\, 2019 at a time when more than 50% of the world’s population will have access to the Web via internet. We seek to seize these moments to reflect on the past 30 years of the Web and plan together for the future of it\, to rethink a Web that is truly inclusive and open\, a Web for Good.”

SUMMARY:Facebook Made Me Do It: Social Media and Democracy | The Alliance Series
DESCRIPTION:“Social media platforms recently came under scrutiny after they failed to prevent the creation of fake accounts aimed at manipulating the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The impact of social media on democracy and public debate is felt in many other ways: today’s algorithms\, for instance\, tend to encourage the spread of emotionally charged opinions\, and create rabbit holes of converging viewpoints rather that exposing us to conflicting perspectives; the most extreme views or those that express moral outrage also tend to gain more traction than moderate and balanced opinions. At the same time\, social media have provided new platforms for democratic debate\, encouraging a broader range of individuals to engage in political dialogue\, and have made a diversity of channels available to users on which they can express themselves. \nThis conversation on social media and democracy between Joan Donovan\, Director of the Technology and Social Change Research Project at the Harvard Kennedy School and Célia Zolynski and Judith Rochfeld\, Law Professors from Paris I Sorbonne\, is presented as part of the Alliance Series at Albertine. The conversation will be moderated by Kris-Stella Trump\, director of the Anxieties of Democracy program at the Social Science Research Council.”

SUMMARY:The Myth of the Media: Historicizing Journalism's Role in American Democracy
DESCRIPTION:“Alternative facts and fake news have complicated our trust in the Fourth Estate\, but has our media ever been truly objective and democratic? Join BHS and the Social Science Research Council for a discussion that challenges that notion and explores America’s long-standing romanticizing of what the media is and how it functions. Race\, gender\, and power have always played an essential role defining the news we serve to the public. We’ll look at the people who have benefitted from this – and those who have been harmed – with SiriusSM host and former New York Daily News columnist Karen Hunter; Kim Gallon\, founder and director of the Black Press Research Collective and assistant professor of history at Purdue University; and Andie Tucher\, director of Columbia Journalism School’s PhD program who is currently working on a book about the history of fake news. Moderated by Kathryn Cramer Brownell\, associate professor at Purdue whose work focuses on the how media and popular culture influence American political institutions.”

SUMMARY:Democracy and Digital Media
DESCRIPTION:“In 1998\, MIT’s Comparative Media Studies program held the first Media in Transition (MiT) conference and inaugurated a related book series. Research from that first MiT conference appeared in Democracy and New Media\, Jenkins & Thorburn\, eds.\, (MIT Press\, 2003). Now\, twenty years later\, we are organizing the 10th iteration of the event. Much has changed over these two decades\, but the theme “democracy and digital media” is as urgent as ever. Twenty years ago there was no Facebook\, Twitter\, or Netflix. iPhones and Samsung Galaxies had not yet hit the shelves. And Siri and Alexa were still in development. Since 1998\, media have undergone major transition. We have witnessed a shift from Napster to Spotify\, from Web 1.0 to 2.0\, from CU-SeeMe to Twitch TV\, and beyond. We have experienced the rise of social media\, civic media\, algorithmic cultures\, and have seen ever greater concentration of media ownership. The events of 9/11 catalyzed intensified state surveillance and privatized security using various media technologies. Undergirding these shifts have been major transformations in global media infrastructure\, the platformization of the Internet\, and the ubiquity of the mobile phone. \nIn the US\, we also have seen changes in the news ecosystem with the likes of ProPublica and community engagement journalism. At the same time\, public trust in media has dropped from 55% in 1998 to 32% in 2016\, according to a Pew report. For better and worse\, a growth of interest in media ritual and a decline in the more familiar transmission paradigm is underway. Given such changes\, concepts of participation\, trust\, and democracy are increasingly fraught and have been powerfully repositioned. How will our news media look and sound in the next decade? What can we learn from news media of the past? What can international perspectives reveal about the variability and plasticity of media landscapes? How are non-traditional sources of learning\, knowledge production\, and participation reshaping civic spheres? We are interested in how these issues play out across media\, whether as represented in television series and films\, or enacted in rule set and player interactions in games\, or enabled in community media\, music\, social media\, and talk radio. We welcome research that considers these issues in public media and commercial media\, with individual users and collective stakeholders\, across media infrastructures and media texts\, and embedded in various historical eras or cultural settings.”
