SUMMARY:Diversity and Inequality in Social Networks | Network Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:Online social networks often mirror inequality in real-world networks\, from historical prejudice\, economic or social factors. Such disparities are often picked up and amplified by algorithms that leverage social data for the purpose of providing recommendations\, diffusing information\, or forming groups. In this talk\, we’ll discuss possible explanations for algorithmic bias in social networks\, specifically in (i) recommendation algorithms and (ii) the influence maximization problem. Using the preferential attachment model with unequal communities\, we’ll characterize the relationship between homophily\, network centrality\, and bias through the power-law degree distributions of the nodes\, and study the conditions in which diversity interventions can actually yield more efficient and equitable outcomes. In addition\, we’ll see that recommendations which use the neighborhood of individuals may hinder the incoming connections of minority groups\, while algorithms that use centrality-based measures in diffusing information may leave minorities out of the loop. In addition\, we’ll discuss a set of heuristics that leverage the network structure to maximize the diffusion of a message while not creating disparate impact among participants based on sensitive demographics like gender or race. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by ethnographic work with queer of color users of the platform Tumblr during its heyday from 2010-2015 and using the Tumblr presence of Filipinx transfeminine visual and performance artist Mark Aguhar as a recurring touchstone\, this talk’s provocation is that the assumptive ways in which a social media platform “should” be designed — singular identity\, linear text exchanges\, direct messaging\, traversable connections\, and more — in fact instantiate a model of “Man” that can be traced back to the long violence of European colonialism. Relying on Sylvia Wynter’s invocation of the idea of homo oeconomicus as well as Lisa Lowe’s historical analysis of the colonial-era origins of the modern liberal subject\, this talk excavates these assumptions by advocating for and practicing a critical “close reading of design.” It then offers alternative design examples as opportunities for resisting this logic\, inviting us to imagine digital sociality from a standpoint of interdependence instead of the stance of the assumptive liberal individual. \n[…]

Most of the research and public debate focuses on overtly fake material\, particularly as it is distributed through social media. But\, the vast majority of news consumption is actual produced by mainstream media\, and the most common mode of consumption is television. Meanwhile\, many key demographic groups consume almost no news at all. Concerns about lack of information or misinformation should focus on where people actual consume (or don’t consume) news\, and the product they are actually consuming: mainstream media. \nDavid Rothschild is an economist at Microsoft Research. He has written extensively\, in both the academic and popular press. His work pushes the boundaries on varying data and methods: polling\, prediction markets\, social media and online data\, and large behavioral and administrative data. SUMMARY:Credible threat: Attacks against women online and the future of democracy | Centre for Research in Communication and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Activists. Journalists. Elected Representatives. Public Intellectuals. When women are vocal about political and social issues\, too-often they are flogged with attacks via social networking sites\, comment sections\, discussion boards\, email\, and direct message. Rather than targeting their ideas\, the abuse targets their identities\, pummeling them with rape threats\, attacks on their appearance and presumed sexual behavior\, and a cacophony of misogynistic\, racist\, xenophobic\, and homophobic stereotypes and epithets. Identity-based attacks are particularly severe for those women from racial\, ethnic\, and religious minority groups or who work in domains dominated by men. Feminists and women who challenge traditional gender norms are also frequently targeted. This toxicity comes with economic\, professional\, and psychological costs for those targeted\, but it also exacts societal-level costs that are rarely recognized: it erodes civil liberties\, diminishes our public discourse\, thins the knowledge available to inform policy and electoral decision-making\, and teaches women that activism and public service are high-risk endeavors to be avoided. Sobieraj traces these underexplored effects\, showing that when identity-based attacks succeed in constraining women’s use of digital publics\, there are democratic consequences that cannot be ignored. \n[…]

News websites have financial incentives to spread disinformation\, in order to increase their online traffic and\, ultimately\, their advertising revenue. Meanwhile\, the dissemination of disinformation has disruptive and impactful consequences. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a recent example. By disrupting society’s shared sense of accepted facts\, these narratives undermine public health\, safety and government responses. \nTo combat ad-funded disinformation\, the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) deploys its assessment framework to rate news domains’ risk of disinforming their readers. These independent\, trusted and neutral ratings are used by advertisers\, ad tech companies and platforms\, to redirect their online ad spending in line with their brand safety and disinformation risk mitigation strategies. \nGDI defines disinformation as ‘adversarial narratives that create real world harm’\, and the GDI risk rating provides information about a range of indicators related to the risk that a given news website will disinform its readers by spreading these adversarial narratives.
