They dominate cultural and political institutions and make up the largest slice of the electorate. They’re also\, on average\, whiter\, wealthier\, and more conservative than younger generations\, placing them increasingly at odds with those voters. \nIn this seminar\, Penn State University Assistant Professor and CSMaP Faculty Affiliate Kevin Munger will discuss his new book\, which marshals novel data and survey evidence to argue that generational conflict will define the politics of the next decade. Munger examines the historical trends that made the Baby Boomers so consequential\, traces the emergence of age-based political and cultural divisions\, and explains how a shared identity and purpose among Millennials and Gen Z could topple Boomer power. SUMMARY:AI & Social Manipulation | Northeastern University Network Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:Networks have dramatically changed the way we experience the world. Information access and broadcasting have been revolutionized. The Internet\, the Web\, and online platforms bring us together: our society is experiencing the effects\, both positive and negative\, of ubiquitous and unparalleled connectivity. In this talk\, I will overview my decade-long journey into understanding the implications of online platforms for our society\, democracy\, and public health. I’ll first focus on online manipulation and illustrate how bots and trolls exacerbate the spread of inaccurate information. Their operations span domains from politics to public health. I’ll dive deep into our discovery that bots attempted to manipulate the online conversation about the 2016 US Election. Our work is the only peer-reviewed study of online political interference that appeared before November 8\, 2016\, and it has informed official government investigations as well as new policies and regulations. These problems are far from being solved\, as I will illustrate similar issues with the 2020 U.S. Election\, as well as COVID-related chatter. I’ll conclude by discussing the tools we developed to understand and combat online misinformation\, detect bots and trolls\, and characterize their activity\, behavior\, and strategies\, suggesting how they are changing the way researchers and the public study communication networks in the era of automation and artificial intelligence. \nAbout the speaker\nEmilio Ferrara is a professor of communication and computer science at USC Annenberg and at the USC Viterbi Department of Computer Science\, and Director of the Annenberg Networks Network (ANN) center and co-director of the Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS) center.

DESCRIPTION:Governments\, humanitarian organizations and private contractors are capturing\, storing and sharing an ever increasing volume of identity data\, much of it pertaining to individuals such as refugees\, whistleblowers and other vulnerable people who may never interact directly with the databases where their data is stored. While many countries have enacted legislation to establish baseline safety protocols for protecting personal data\, and online privacy and security standards are becoming more ubiquitous outside of the technology economy\, protecting data about people remains a challenging and underappreciated area of risk for most organizations\, and securely sharing that data a significant impediment. \nThis talk by Timothy Quinn of the Dark Data Project\, co-sponsored by IDDP\, the Humanitarian Action Initiative\, and SMPA’s Media and Peacebuilding Project\, provides a better understanding of the tiered reality of identity protection\, outlining appropriate strategies suitable to the needs of vulnerable people in a wide variety of contexts.

SUMMARY:Essentially Unprotected: Health Data and the Surveillance of Essential Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic radically changed the lives of essential workers in America\, shifting the conditions\, timing\, equipment\, and spatial practices of their work\, and expanding surveillance inside the workplace. And while employers collected increasing amounts of data about workers’ health\, little of it was shared with workers themselves. The result was an information vacuum that left workers in the dark about their potential exposure and risk\, fueling immense anxiety and concern for themselves and those around them. \nData & Society’s forthcoming report Essentially Unprotected is based on interviews with 50 people who worked in grocery\, warehousing\, manufacturing\, or meat and food processing during the pandemic. The report highlights their experiences and efforts to manage the confusing and often terrifying challenges of the in-person pandemic workplace. \nIn this conversation\, we will examine the social\, economic\, and regulatory environment that laid the groundwork for serious information gaps surrounding infections. We will explore how technology contributed to the collection of data and worsened workers’ stress and frustration — and\, in select cases\, facilitated information-sharing that protected workers’ privacy and addressed their fears.

DESCRIPTION:The 2023 AoIR conference addresses themes of revolutions\, and their contingent promises and failures as related to digital technologies. How have digital technologies been enrolled in revolutionary projects? How have discourses of revolutions taken shape in projects of social justice\, the reorganization of social orders\, or as corporate manipulations of revolutionary promises? This conference is an opportunity to engage with these complex and crucial questions. We welcome submissions on the following themes and beyond: \n\nRevolutions\, the rhetoric of revolution\, and critiques thereof\nThe successes and failures of revolutions\, both within digital technology and using digital technologies\nRevolutionary tactics\, actions\, and goals\nHistory of revolutions and internet technologies\nSovereignties within\, across\, and against the digital world\, including revolutionary or alternate sovereignties to those that currently exist\nDemocratization versus mobbing and the politics of mass participation\nRevolutions in research and methods\nRevolutionary understandings of time and place\, and envisioning pasts or futures as revolutionary goals\nBalancing the visibility as a political strategy with the capacities for increased surveillance\n\nWe also welcome submissions on topics that address social\, cultural\, political\, legal\, aesthetic\, economic\, and/or philosophical aspects of the internet beyond the conference theme. DESCRIPTION:Our Train the Trainer short courses are paid\, week-long virtual short courses to train experienced policy professionals to teach our methods for policy impact. We are hosting 2 virtual training courses with limited enrollment: Policy Impact (tentatively scheduled from May 15-19\, 2023) and Writing and Communicating for Policy (tentatively scheduled from June 5-9\, 2023). \nSubject matter experts in science\, technology\, cybersecurity\, or a related field with 3 or more years of policy experience and an interest in training others on how to have policy impact are encouraged to apply. Selected trainers will be paid a $2\,000 honoraria for each program in which they enroll. SUMMARY:UT Austin Good Systems Speaker Series | Predict and Surveil: Data\, Discretion\, and the Future of Policing
DESCRIPTION:The scope of criminal legal surveillance\, from the police to the prisons\, has expanded rapidly in recent decades. At the same time\, the use of big data has spread across a range of fields\, including finance\, politics\, health\, and criminal justice. Drawing on fieldwork conducted within the Los Angeles Police Department\, University of Texas at Austin Professor Sara Brayne shows how law enforcement uses predictive analytics and new surveillance technologies to allocate resources\, identify criminal suspects\, and conduct investigations. She then analyzes how the adoption of big data analytics transforms organizational practices\, and how the police themselves respond to these new data-driven strategies. Proponents argue that big data can be used to make law enforcement practices more effective\, fair\, accountable\, and objective\, in part by stripping discretion from biased front-line actors. This research reveals the ways that police use of big data does not eliminate discretion\, but rather displaces discretionary power to earlier\, less visible parts of the policing process. \nThis is an online event. DESCRIPTION:While mis- and dis-information is primarily understood in terms of its facticity\, or lack thereof\, the very circulation of information such as news stories is tied to the cultural contexts in which people come to trust and rely on certain channels of information. Tackling misinformation\, then\, requires not just repudiation of its claims but an understanding of how and why its claims become significant — through what cultural channels — for certain groups of people. How do these channels influence what people will believe in their news and information consumption habits? How do recommender algorithms shape cultural channels that mark certain information as compelling? How does understanding the cultural sites of meaning-making help us address mis- and dis-information? \nThis panel seeks to surface the cultural dimensions of mis- and dis-information through the lens of authenticity: how claims to truthfulness and facticity are recognized as believable by communities\, and so how those claims are authenticated as truth or facts. Our panelists will discuss the historical\, technological\, and political aspects of claiming access to an authentic reality\, and how addressing mis- and dis-information through policy requires engaging culturally with those claims. \nRegister to receive the event Zoom link on the day of the event.
