DESCRIPTION:The concatenation of European crises shows major transformations in the contemporary international arena and points to the reasons for a structural change in the modes and uses of European public diplomacy\, both inside and outside of EU institutions. Since 2008\, European institutions have learned to live in a state of crisis and response: the Eurozone crisis (2008)\, the Ukrainian issue (2014)\, the refugee movement (2015)\, the Brexit referendum (2016)\, the new transatlantic relationship (2017)\, and the COVID19 pandemic (2019). Each of these situations has caused a tremendous amount of stress and strain that has tested institutions and offered a lesson in international political communication as well. \nBut what’s new in the current Russian crisis? What’s the role of disinformation in the EU future? Why is disinformation recognized as the “biggest challenge and threat” to the EU power? In this context\, the construction of the enlightened dream of the EU is fading in the biggest political and economic crisis of its history. The fight against disinformation will be decisive in the future of the EU based not only on rational arguments\, but also on other attributes of public communication and political leadership. Cyberfeminism and Net Art layered a foundation as the digital realm as an artistic medium in the early 1990s. Today\, contemporary art is almost unthinkable without the network effects of Instagram\, Twitter\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Facebook. \nLiving by protocol queries the contemporary reflections of artists on\, with\, and by social media. The nine grid structured monitors within the Lightbox Gallery become a subface onto the social database structures secret of extraction. The program will consist of six weeks of curated\, rotating media works and experiments. The show will commence with one week of talks\, discussions\, and other hybrid programming. Social media will be simultaneously the topic\, platform\, and space of experimentation.

DESCRIPTION:While trust in political institutions rapidly deteriorates and the technology and media companies that we rely on repeatedly fail to meet our information needs\, the public still overwhelmingly trusts libraries. That’s because librarians fulfill a service mission as community information stewards–long serving as the only place people can go for free internet access\, computer instruction\, books and access to critical government resources. \nAs the information needs of communities have expanded from a crisis of access to a crisis of trust\, librarians help patrons discern fact from fiction online and increasingly find themselves defending decisions about which books and information to carry and which to pull. The curatorial decisions of libraries have been shoved into the fray of polarized cultural and political debates about how to educate about racism in public schools\, how to provide community resources on queerness\, and whether or not to carry literature that promotes hate. \nMeanwhile\, debates rage about how tech companies and governments can regulate and retool our information ecosystems to keep communities safe and informed. SUMMARY:Summer Workshop on Combating Misinformation: Theoretical and Design Challenges to Support a Healthy Information Ecosystem | Syracuse University
DESCRIPTION:Although misinformation has been used as a tool for propaganda throughout history\, it has recently garnered immense public attention following the Brexit referendum and the US elections in 2016. Online social media outlets lack regular news media’s editorial standards and procedures for ensuring the veracity of information\, and as a result\, social media platforms have become arteries for the dissemination of misinformation. We define misinformation as false or misleading information presented as fact regardless of intent. While only a tiny percentage of people share false or misleading information\, the proliferation of false and misleading information on social media has eroded trust in our democracies and given rise to more advanced forms of social deception. \nIn recent years\, information systems (IS) researchers have investigated this phenomenon and suggested ways of mitigating its spread. Some proposed solutions by scholars and industry professionals include\, news presentation and their formats\, source ratings and credibility\, and correcting and debunking the misinformation. \nThis inaugural two-day online workshop hosted by the Center for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS)\, seeks to bring together scholars to rethink contemporary paradigms and mobilize discussion on pioneering technological solutions to combat misinformation. We hope that this discussion will provide opportunities for collaboration\, help develop a research agenda that illuminates areas for future research that eventually leads to solutions. \nAt the end of this workshop\, we will synthesize and present the ideas in a white paper which would be available on the CCDS website. \n[…]

An event in four acts\, which will gather experts and stakeholders. \nThe four sequences (45’ each) will be devoted to key challenges : \n\nBuilding a global governance to tackle the information chaos\nShifting from immunity to accountability regimes online\nSecuring pluralism of information online\nImplementing the “New Deal for journalism”\n\nThe Forum will reveal in preview its concrete recommendations on pluralism of information in curation and indexation algorithms. Director of the Center for Media Freedom and Media Pluralism at the European University Institute\, Pier Luigi Parcu will present concrete and operational recommendations for promoting diversity of ideas online\, a necessity for the quality of public debate. This professor was the chairman of the international working group on pluralism launched by the Forum.

SUMMARY:AI & Social Manipulation | Northeastern University Network Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:Networks have dramatically changed the way we experience the world. Information access and broadcasting have been revolutionized. The Internet\, the Web\, and online platforms bring us together: our society is experiencing the effects\, both positive and negative\, of ubiquitous and unparalleled connectivity. In this talk\, I will overview my decade-long journey into understanding the implications of online platforms for our society\, democracy\, and public health. I’ll first focus on online manipulation and illustrate how bots and trolls exacerbate the spread of inaccurate information. Their operations span domains from politics to public health. I’ll dive deep into our discovery that bots attempted to manipulate the online conversation about the 2016 US Election. Our work is the only peer-reviewed study of online political interference that appeared before November 8\, 2016\, and it has informed official government investigations as well as new policies and regulations. These problems are far from being solved\, as I will illustrate similar issues with the 2020 U.S. Election\, as well as COVID-related chatter. I’ll conclude by discussing the tools we developed to understand and combat online misinformation\, detect bots and trolls\, and characterize their activity\, behavior\, and strategies\, suggesting how they are changing the way researchers and the public study communication networks in the era of automation and artificial intelligence. \nAbout the speaker\nEmilio Ferrara is a professor of communication and computer science at USC Annenberg and at the USC Viterbi Department of Computer Science\, and Director of the Annenberg Networks Network (ANN) center and co-director of the Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS) center.

DESCRIPTION:Governments\, humanitarian organizations and private contractors are capturing\, storing and sharing an ever increasing volume of identity data\, much of it pertaining to individuals such as refugees\, whistleblowers and other vulnerable people who may never interact directly with the databases where their data is stored. While many countries have enacted legislation to establish baseline safety protocols for protecting personal data\, and online privacy and security standards are becoming more ubiquitous outside of the technology economy\, protecting data about people remains a challenging and underappreciated area of risk for most organizations\, and securely sharing that data a significant impediment. \nThis talk by Timothy Quinn of the Dark Data Project\, co-sponsored by IDDP\, the Humanitarian Action Initiative\, and SMPA’s Media and Peacebuilding Project\, provides a better understanding of the tiered reality of identity protection\, outlining appropriate strategies suitable to the needs of vulnerable people in a wide variety of contexts.

SUMMARY:Essentially Unprotected: Health Data and the Surveillance of Essential Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic radically changed the lives of essential workers in America\, shifting the conditions\, timing\, equipment\, and spatial practices of their work\, and expanding surveillance inside the workplace. And while employers collected increasing amounts of data about workers’ health\, little of it was shared with workers themselves. The result was an information vacuum that left workers in the dark about their potential exposure and risk\, fueling immense anxiety and concern for themselves and those around them. \nData & Society’s forthcoming report Essentially Unprotected is based on interviews with 50 people who worked in grocery\, warehousing\, manufacturing\, or meat and food processing during the pandemic. The report highlights their experiences and efforts to manage the confusing and often terrifying challenges of the in-person pandemic workplace. \nIn this conversation\, we will examine the social\, economic\, and regulatory environment that laid the groundwork for serious information gaps surrounding infections. We will explore how technology contributed to the collection of data and worsened workers’ stress and frustration — and\, in select cases\, facilitated information-sharing that protected workers’ privacy and addressed their fears.
