DESCRIPTION:The extent to which we value intuitive or evidence-based reasoning has important implications for our susceptibility to misinformation. National survey data from Nov-Dec 2020 demonstrate that Trump favorability\, conservatism\, and Republicanism are associated with instinct-based epistemic values and a rejection of expertise and evidence. Results also indicate that these same epistemic motivations increase one’s likelihood of believing in misinformation in matters of both public and democratic health. Implications for democratic and public health will be discussed. \nDannagal G. Young (Ph.D. ’07) is a Professor of Communication and Political Science at the University of Delaware where she studies the content\, audience\, and effects of nontraditional political information. SUMMARY:Resisting and Reversing Western Media Imperialism?: Turkey’s Global Communication Outlets | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Since the 2010s\, Turkey’s ruling AKP government has vastly expanded its global communication apparatus to promote the country as a rising great power and the benevolent guardian of Muslims. In this presentation\, Bilge Yesil will analyze the political mechanisms and ideational frameworks that underlie the new English-language outlets the AKP and its proxies developed after the Gezi Park protests of 2013 — an event they interpreted as a Western ploy to overthrow the Erdogan government. In the post-Gezi period\, critical coverage of Erdogan soared in international news media and the AKP sought to rebuff them via newly-established print\, broadcast and digital outlets. Drawing on an analysis of official statements and government documents as well as interviews with media professionals that work/ed at state-run and pro-AKP news media\, Yesil argues that the Erdogan government views the global communication landscape as yet another battlefield in the ostensible conflict they posit between East and West\, and Western journalists as emissaries of imperialism. With all this in mind\, Yesil explores how the AKP conceptualizes its global communication machinery as a counter-hegemonic force and discuss the implications of the type of journalism its proxies perform. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Lies\, Free Speech\, and the Law | Knight First Amendment Institute
DESCRIPTION:On April 8\, 2022\, the Knight Institute will host a symposium to explore how the law regulates or should regulate false and misleading speech. The symposium\, titled “Lies\, Free Speech\, and the Law\,” is being overseen by the Institute’s Senior Visiting Research Scholar Genevieve Lakier and will take place at Columbia University. \nThe symposium will focus on five themes that examine the connections between lies\, freedom of speech (construed broadly)\, and the law. These are: 1) the sociological and constitutional status of false or misleading speech; 2) defining the category of lies; 3) structural regulation and the problem of lies; 4) government lies; and 5) the deregulation of disclosure. \nDue to university restrictions\, only Columbia University students\, faculty\, and staff will be allowed to attend in person. DESCRIPTION:The concatenation of European crises shows major transformations in the contemporary international arena and points to the reasons for a structural change in the modes and uses of European public diplomacy\, both inside and outside of EU institutions. Since 2008\, European institutions have learned to live in a state of crisis and response: the Eurozone crisis (2008)\, the Ukrainian issue (2014)\, the refugee movement (2015)\, the Brexit referendum (2016)\, the new transatlantic relationship (2017)\, and the COVID19 pandemic (2019). Each of these situations has caused a tremendous amount of stress and strain that has tested institutions and offered a lesson in international political communication as well. \nBut what’s new in the current Russian crisis? What’s the role of disinformation in the EU future? Why is disinformation recognized as the “biggest challenge and threat” to the EU power? In this context\, the construction of the enlightened dream of the EU is fading in the biggest political and economic crisis of its history. The problems and possibilities of this new media reality were reflected and questioned by artists long before its popularization. Cyberfeminism and Net Art layered a foundation as the digital realm as an artistic medium in the early 1990s. Today\, contemporary art is almost unthinkable without the network effects of Instagram\, Twitter\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Facebook. \nLiving by protocol queries the contemporary reflections of artists on\, with\, and by social media. The nine grid structured monitors within the Lightbox Gallery become a subface onto the social database structures secret of extraction. The program will consist of six weeks of curated\, rotating media works and experiments. The show will commence with one week of talks\, discussions\, and other hybrid programming. Social media will be simultaneously the topic\, platform\, and space of experimentation.

In the digital realm\, social media grapples with a similar contention: social networks would not exist without platform businesses and yet their public benefits are at odds with the drive for private profit. \nJoin us for a special Berkman Klein Center Luncheon featuring Joanne Cheung\, who will discuss her research and open access article Real Estate Politik: Democracy and the Financialization of Social Networks\, which emerged from the Berkman Klein Ethical Tech Working Group and was originally published in a special issue of the Journal of Social Computing\, “Technology Ethics in Action: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives” (Part 1\, Part 2). \nCheung argues that “social networks are privately owned public spaces caught between the misaligned incentives of public good and private profit” and that their business models perpetuate historical inequities. \nCheung’s article also explores the structural problems with social media from the perspective of land use. DESCRIPTION:While trust in political institutions rapidly deteriorates and the technology and media companies that we rely on repeatedly fail to meet our information needs\, the public still overwhelmingly trusts libraries. That’s because librarians fulfill a service mission as community information stewards–long serving as the only place people can go for free internet access\, computer instruction\, books and access to critical government resources. \nAs the information needs of communities have expanded from a crisis of access to a crisis of trust\, librarians help patrons discern fact from fiction online and increasingly find themselves defending decisions about which books and information to carry and which to pull. The curatorial decisions of libraries have been shoved into the fray of polarized cultural and political debates about how to educate about racism in public schools\, how to provide community resources on queerness\, and whether or not to carry literature that promotes hate. \nMeanwhile\, debates rage about how tech companies and governments can regulate and retool our information ecosystems to keep communities safe and informed.
