DESCRIPTION:In Discriminating Data: Correlation\, Neighborhoods\, and the New Politics of Recognition\, Wendy Hui Kyong Chun reveals how polarization is a goal—not an error—within big data and machine learning. These methods\, she argues\, encode segregation\, eugenics\, and identity politics through their default assumptions and conditions. Correlation\, which grounds big data’s predictive potential\, stems from twentieth-century eugenic attempts to “breed” a better future. Recommender systems foster angry clusters of sameness through homophily. Users are “trained” to become authentically predictable via a politics and technology of recognition. Machine learning and data analytics thus seek to disrupt the future by making disruption impossible. \nChun\, who has a background in systems design engineering as well as media studies and cultural theory\, explains that although machine learning algorithms may not officially include race as a category\, they embed whiteness as a default. Facial recognition technology\, for example\, relies on the faces of Hollywood celebrities and university undergraduates—groups not famous for their diversity. Homophily emerged as a concept to describe white U.S. resident attitudes to living in biracial yet segregated public housing. Predictive policing technology deploys models trained on studies of predominantly underserved neighborhoods. DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that health-related misinformation and disinformation can dangerously undermine the response to a public health crisis. Misleading information\, intentional or not\, has a myriad of effects\, including reduced trust in public health responders\, increased belief in false medical cures\, and politicization of public health measures. The spread of these falsehoods has led to more infections\, deaths\, disruption\, and disorganization of the effort to combat the pandemic\, and it is likely these problems will persist in future public health emergencies. DESCRIPTION:This event is virtual and will be streamed live on Zoom (mit.zoom.us/j/96579656038) and recorded. \n\nVideo game engines have promoted a new cultural economy for software production and have provided a common architecture for digital content creation across what were once distinct media verticals—film\, television\, video games and other immersive and interactive media forms that can leverage real-time 3D visualization. Game engines are the building blocks for efficient real-time visualization\, and they signal quite forcefully the colonizing influence of programming. Video game engines are powering our visual futures\, and engine developers that include Unity Technologies and Epic Games are rapidly iterating their products to tackle new markets\, where data and visuality continue to converge. This analysis\, which draws from software studies and studies of visual culture\, examines a tool that is fairly new to the Epic Games arsenal—the in-development MetaHuman Creator that is part of Epic’s proprietary Unreal Engine. MetaHuman creation is a fluid of process\, and the speedy transformation of character rigs and other non-binary attributes highlights the potential queerness or openness of data. Yet the ongoing push toward (hyper)realism in commercial media has birthed a visual economy which is supported by an industrial apparatus that privileges mastery over the tools of production\, and where bodies and politics are often cleaved in the design process. \n[…]

DESCRIPTION:Its ban of Twitter in 2021 marked the Nigerian state as an analog entity that forbids the agency of its digital citizens. In this talk\, James Yékú will track the implications of this ban in the context of what he has called cultural netizenship\, the organizing rubric for visual articulations of internet citizenship that often manifests through the performance of popular culture in an ontologically visual social web. Unlike the normative signals of netizenship as a performance of citizenship and participatory politics online\, cultural netizenship evokes the deployment of visual and popular culture on social media to push back against the boundaries of hegemonic culture. DESCRIPTION:The extent to which we value intuitive or evidence-based reasoning has important implications for our susceptibility to misinformation. National survey data from Nov-Dec 2020 demonstrate that Trump favorability\, conservatism\, and Republicanism are associated with instinct-based epistemic values and a rejection of expertise and evidence. Results also indicate that these same epistemic motivations increase one’s likelihood of believing in misinformation in matters of both public and democratic health. Implications for democratic and public health will be discussed. \nDannagal G. Young (Ph.D. ’07) is a Professor of Communication and Political Science at the University of Delaware where she studies the content\, audience\, and effects of nontraditional political information. SUMMARY:Resisting and Reversing Western Media Imperialism?: Turkey’s Global Communication Outlets | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Since the 2010s\, Turkey’s ruling AKP government has vastly expanded its global communication apparatus to promote the country as a rising great power and the benevolent guardian of Muslims. In this presentation\, Bilge Yesil will analyze the political mechanisms and ideational frameworks that underlie the new English-language outlets the AKP and its proxies developed after the Gezi Park protests of 2013 — an event they interpreted as a Western ploy to overthrow the Erdogan government. In the post-Gezi period\, critical coverage of Erdogan soared in international news media and the AKP sought to rebuff them via newly-established print\, broadcast and digital outlets. Drawing on an analysis of official statements and government documents as well as interviews with media professionals that work/ed at state-run and pro-AKP news media\, Yesil argues that the Erdogan government views the global communication landscape as yet another battlefield in the ostensible conflict they posit between East and West\, and Western journalists as emissaries of imperialism. With all this in mind\, Yesil explores how the AKP conceptualizes its global communication machinery as a counter-hegemonic force and discuss the implications of the type of journalism its proxies perform. \n[…]
