SUMMARY:CDCS Colloquium: Social Media and the Shape of “Man” | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by ethnographic work with queer of color users of the platform Tumblr during its heyday from 2010-2015 and using the Tumblr presence of Filipinx transfeminine visual and performance artist Mark Aguhar as a recurring touchstone\, this talk’s provocation is that the assumptive ways in which a social media platform “should” be designed — singular identity\, linear text exchanges\, direct messaging\, traversable connections\, and more — in fact instantiate a model of “Man” that can be traced back to the long violence of European colonialism. Relying on Sylvia Wynter’s invocation of the idea of homo oeconomicus as well as Lisa Lowe’s historical analysis of the colonial-era origins of the modern liberal subject\, this talk excavates these assumptions by advocating for and practicing a critical “close reading of design.” It then offers alternative design examples as opportunities for resisting this logic\, inviting us to imagine digital sociality from a standpoint of interdependence instead of the stance of the assumptive liberal individual. \n[…]

Yet a careful review of the scientific literature indicates there is surprisingly little evidence that these factors shape political beliefs or inter-group attitudes. Drawing upon multiple field experiments\, large-scale analysis of social media data\, and longitudinal in-depth interviews\, this talk will describe Bail’s new book\, Breaking the Social Media Prism: How to Make our Platforms Less Polarizing. SUMMARY:Diversity and Inequality in Social Networks | Network Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:Online social networks often mirror inequality in real-world networks\, from historical prejudice\, economic or social factors. Such disparities are often picked up and amplified by algorithms that leverage social data for the purpose of providing recommendations\, diffusing information\, or forming groups. In this talk\, we’ll discuss possible explanations for algorithmic bias in social networks\, specifically in (i) recommendation algorithms and (ii) the influence maximization problem. Using the preferential attachment model with unequal communities\, we’ll characterize the relationship between homophily\, network centrality\, and bias through the power-law degree distributions of the nodes\, and study the conditions in which diversity interventions can actually yield more efficient and equitable outcomes. In addition\, we’ll see that recommendations which use the neighborhood of individuals may hinder the incoming connections of minority groups\, while algorithms that use centrality-based measures in diffusing information may leave minorities out of the loop. In addition\, we’ll discuss a set of heuristics that leverage the network structure to maximize the diffusion of a message while not creating disparate impact among participants based on sensitive demographics like gender or race. SUMMARY:Factual Corrections and Misinformation During the 2020 U.S. Election: Evidence from Panel Experiments |  Network Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:We measure the immediate and medium-term effects of 21 highly-trafficked pieces of misinformation and fact-checks during the 2020 U.S. election with eight panel experiments (N = 17\,681). Exposure to misinformation increased false beliefs by an average of 4.3 points on a 100-point belief certainty scale. Exposure to fact-checks more than corrected this effect\, decreasing false beliefs by 10.5 points. The effects of fact-checks persisted at 66% of the immediate effect one week after exposure\, and at 50% after more than two weeks. We estimate minuscule effects of misinformation and fact-checks on evaluations of political figures and groups. Fact-checks of party-congenial false claims were more effective among Democrats than Republicans. We examine this asymmetry with data provided to us by the fact-checking organization PolitiFact. We document robust heterogeneities by personality type and cognitive style\, which further investigation suggests may be related to time spent reading fact-checks. \n[…]

DESCRIPTION:Civil society and government stakeholders have very low trust in industry\, based on repeated violations of the latter’s own promises. Concurrently\, information asymmetry is an initial hurdle to both studying and proposing solutions for platform governance. However\, as with everything in this space\, the answer is rarely as simple as it may seem at first glance. Transparency\, a necessary first step\, may end up enabling bad actors\, may inadvertently compromise privacy\, and ultimately can become a substitute for meaningful policy change. Do systems need to be fully rebuilt in order to restore a sense of balance\, or is that balance a red herring? Is the solution policy\, tech\, both\, neither?
