DESCRIPTION:Social media platforms are increasingly shaped by the integration of generative AI alongside long-standing analytical and predictive models. Today’s algorithmic systems are moving from the background infrastructure to the forefront of digital social life – intervening in the content feeds as conversational agents like xAI’s Grok\, reshaping identity through synthetic likenesses of OpenAI’s Sora-2\, and expanding the social ecosystem itself through projects like Butterflies AI and Moltbook\, where autonomous AI agents operate in coexistence with (or independently of) human users. As these developments rapidly outpace existing research frameworks\, the need for mixed critical methodologies grows more urgent. \nSynthetic social media research takes as its starting point the recognition that platforms shaped by generative AI are not simply data-processing systems but cultural environments organized through algorithms\, interfaces\, and shared ways of feeling and knowing. Analytically\, the attribute “synthetic” implies more than artificial arrangements of collective agency. Rather than treating AI as a radical rupture\, it situates generative systems within broader arrangements of human-machine co-creation that amplify specific imaginaries\, values\, and concerns. Methodologically\, it foregrounds ambiguities in how AI platforms recalibrate meaning and how users develop a practical “feel” for algorithmic systems while negotiating their constraints. \nCritical digital methods have responded to these developments by treating chatbots and generative systems as part of the research design as well as objects of inquiry in their own right. Synthetic text\, images\, and sounds are no longer exceptional artifacts but common platform vernaculars\, sustained by entangled practices of prompting\, remixing\, and circulation. Within platform studies\, interface methods\, visual digital methods\, and emerging forms of synthetic ethnography\, AI systems have been repurposed for formatting\, summarization\, annotation\, labeling\, and the generation of synthetic data\, while being interrogated for how they shape knowledge production. This work has foregrounded questions of method: Are we merely studying AI slop\, distracted by the automated excess of content stripped of context and meaning\, or are we witnessing the redefinition of social media itself along with its affordances and cultures of use? \nThe 2026 Autumn School edition of the CRC “Media of Cooperation” tackles this question by focusing on generative AI as an infrastructural\, cultural\, and regulated component of social media platforms across three intersecting dimensions: At the cultural level of everyday use\, it refers to the routinized practices of prompting or interacting with platform-embedded generative systems through multimodal inputs. Infrastructurally\, it signals a shift in agency\, as platforms keep multiplying affordances that nudge us into co-producing synthetic outputs. Finally\, it foregrounds research techniques for probing AI models in their entanglements with the platform governance and moderation regimes. \nAgainst this background\, we invite participants to submit short contributions inspired by\, though not limited to\, one of the following “how to” prompts: \n\nHow to repurpose AI personas as research personas\nHow to rethink walkthrough methods in light of platforms’ generative affordances\nHow to approach cultural biases conditioned by AI systems and prompt cultures\nHow to study AI moderation as platform policy in action\nHow to explore platform agency and its steering ideologies\nHow to integrate screenshots as a method for capturing synthetic situations\nHow to account for the ambiguities emerging from human-machine co-creation\nHow to develop non-extractive approaches to researching AI platforms\n\nParticipants are invited to submit a short abstract (maximum 500 words excluding references) outlining how their work relates to the event’s theme. Presentations should raise questions or provocations rather than present finished research. Accepted abstracts will be grouped into thematic sessions and discussed in a collaborative\, dialogue-focused format. \nSubmit your proposal by 30. April 2026 \nNotification of acceptance by 15 May 2026 \nRegistration by 15 June 2026 \nThe event opens with a one-day conference and moves into hands-on workshops and project work. Accepted abstracts will be grouped into thematic sessions curated by the organising team. Presenters will be connected via email ahead of time to coordinate their contributions. The first day is about presentations and discussions. The next three days are dedicated to exploring and developing methods – hands-on! We invite you to join a team of interdisciplinary scholars and data designers in probing new methodological combinations. Each of our project teams will present a research question alongside a specific method to be collaboratively explored. Please bring your laptops. The project titles will be announced soon. DESCRIPTION:The rapid diffusion of AI and the emergence of AI agents capable of independently accessing tools\, initiating processes\, and acting on users’ behalf may fundamentally reshape how information and economic activity are organized online. These developments are raising new questions about market power\, entry\, innovation\, and control across the technology stack. At the same time\, the regulatory and enforcement disputes that have defined competition policy in tech in recent years continue to evolve\, as the implications of incumbent platform power become increasingly consequential. \nThe Digital Competition Conference 2027 (DCC ‘27)\, taking place February 9-10\, 2027 in Washington\, DC\, will examine all of these developments through a broad inquiry into competition in digital markets. Building on the success of DCC ‘26 – which brought together participants from 37 countries – the conference will continue to serve as a forum for rigorous\, interdisciplinary discussion on the future of competition in the digital economy across key sectors and jurisdictions. The conference aims to advance a shared understanding of competition in AI and digital markets among researchers\, policymakers\, regulators\, business\, litigators\, technologists\, and civil society experts. \nDiscussion will center on research results and methods\, what stakeholders know and still need to learn about competition challenges and remedies\, and how to create a virtuous cycle where research more effectively informs policymaking and enforcement while regulation enables more effective research. The conference will feature research talks and policy discussions focused on a range of technology markets – as they have been traditionally offered\, and as they are being reshaped by AI – including markets for search\, chatbots\, and AI assistants; consumer and enterprise software\, including browsers\, apps\, harnesses\, and cloud services; advertising; social media; messaging; and connected devices. \nCall for Submissions \nWe are soliciting expressions of interest in researcher participation\, including early-stage or draft research papers\, prepublication papers\, and recent or accepted publications. The program committee will select and curate research talks and poster presentations from the submissions received. Science\, technology\, and innovation are not neutral; as STS scholars\, we understand them as socially\, culturally\, and economically constructed and deeply entangled with a specific form of technoscientific power. The theme emphasizes that money and wealth are increasingly shaping our technoscientific futures\, raising urgent analytical and normative questions about how to reclaim power from “tech” billionaires and oligarchs. At this critical juncture\, our task is not only to critique and demystify technoscience but also transform how others perceive and engage with technoscience. From the reinforcement of harmful value(s) systems to the assetization of knowledge and the erosion of ecological and social justice\, a specifically technoscientific capitalism has embedded market logics and elite control into our knowledge institutions\, innovation choices\, and into technological change itself. Yet\, as we also know so well\, technoscience is always contested\, and STS offers plural and grounded alternatives to understanding and reframing technoscience\, from citizen science to community engagement in innovation to Indigenous knowledge. DESCRIPTION:AoIR 2026 — Mexico City\n\nWe are thrilled to be in Mexico City\, Mexico for AoIR2026! #AoIR2026 will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Mexico City\, from October 14th to 17th\, 2026. It will also be AoIR’s second bilingual conference\, after last year’s successful piloting in Niteroí\, Brazil. \nThis Year’s Theme: Regenerations\nRegeneration(s) opens us up to exploring deeper processes of technological\, cultural\, political\, artistic\, and infrastructural renewal. Online cultures are born\, mature\, decay\, and are reborn in slightly different forms; generations of internet researchers train and mentor each other; new ideas and approaches emerge. Regeneration here is not simply understood as technological repair or sustainability\, but as a relational and ethical process grounded in ongoing responsibilities to land\, peoples\, data\, and communities; Regeneration is cyclical and inseparable from complex histories of resistance as a counterweight to the logics of optimization and maximization that characterize the tech industry. \nGeneration and generativity as productive capacities are also contested processes and capacities as AI companies try to frame generativity as automation\, reproduction\, and passivity at scale. The challenge then is to generate technical\, political\, and communal imagination and maps that allow us to articulate embodied\, alternative\, and active generative futures around collective technological use. This also offers an opportunity to think seriously about how our scholarly networks themselves are generated\, regenerated\, and maintained. \nThis year’s conference is co-hosted by scholars and institutions in both Mexico City/CDMX\, MX\, and Los Angeles\, CA\, two cities with complex and entangled histories. Although they are often thought of as distinct worlds – one\, the historic capital of México\, and the other\, a paradigmatic U.S. metropolis molded by migration\, sprawl\, and imagination. Both historically and now\, they are inextricably tied; from colonial and imperial trade routes to cross-border familial legacies\, to twentieth century labor markets and migration. Turning colonial historical narratives on their heads\, Chicano activists of the 1960s and 70s reminded the world with an insistent rallying cry\, “the border crossed us.” \nIn recent years\, both have seen unprecedented investment from tech companies expanding infrastructure and the transformation of core industries and craft by the increasing encroachment of AI\, even as both cities struggle with severe drought and other environmental and economic consequences hastened by legacies of resource extraction. Mexico City/CDMX has also experienced challenges posed by a significant influx of so-called “digital nomads\,” particularly from the North. Worsening gentrification and an ever-growing population of non-Spanish speakers have sparked a backlash\, pushing back against displacement and economic stratification. Los Angeles\, too\, has been subject to the crisis of housing affordability and gentrification\, a perennial issue exacerbated by the tech hubs like Silicon Beach. DESCRIPTION:PAIRSx Public Sector is an open one-day symposium that will be hosted at the Ada Lovelace Institute on 5th November 2026 to explore how public bodies are engaging and involving the public and civil society organisations around their adoption of AI\, particularly in the UK. \nThe PAIRSx Public Sector symposium is a spin-out event from the Participatory AI Research and Practice Symposium (PAIRS) series which are designed as spaces to present research and case studies on the state of the art in participatory development and governance of AI and to build stronger connections across the field. \nWe seek to create a space that is equally open to contributions and attendance from civil society\, academia\, the public sector and industry\, and that welcomes both presentation of practice\, and empirical or theoretical work. \nClick here to learn more and register to attend. DESCRIPTION:Crossing Boundaries: Advancing Global Dialogue and Well-being through Information Research and Practice \nGlobally\, societies are confronted with intensifying political polarization\, inequities of access to information resources\, eroding public trust\, and widening disparities in economic\, health\, and educational opportunity. Rapid technological transformations\, including the widespread adoption of digital platforms and artificial intelligence\, are changing the ways information is produced\, shared\, used\, and curated. At the same time\, cultural memory institutions\, public information services\, and knowledge infrastructures are under increasing pressure to address global challenges such as sustainable development\, social resilience\, and equitable growth. In this context\, the role of information research and practice goes beyond generating new knowledge\, to connect communities\, preserve culture\, bridge divides\, and ultimately advance human well-being. \nThe theme of the 2026 ASIS&T Annual Meeting\, “Crossing Boundaries: Advancing Global Dialogue and Well-being through Information Research and Practice\,” reflects these imperatives. Hosted for the first time in Asia\, the meeting highlights the association’s growing global influence and its commitment to promoting cross-regional\, cross-linguistic\, and cross-disciplinary dialogue. Crossing boundaries encompasses not only geographic and spatial movement\, but also collaboration among researchers\, practitioners\, educators\, policymakers\, and communities\, as well as the circulation and stewardship of information across diverse sociocultural and institutional contexts. It also underscores the proactive role of information and memory institutions such as libraries\, archives\, and museums\, in fostering mutual understanding and shared responsibility. The theme emphasizes that information scholarship and professional practice have a critical role in advancing equitable access to information\, encouraging inclusive participation\, supporting sustainability\, and improving quality of life for individuals\, communities\, and societies. \nThe 2026 ASIS&T Annual Meeting will take place in Asia as an in-person event. There will be a virtual satellite meeting allowing for an option for virtual participation to ensure broad international engagement.

SUMMARY:Youth Facing Disinformation Event – Council of Europe’s Journalists Matter Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Young people today navigate an information space shaped by algorithms\, platforms and growing disinformation. At the same time\, journalists\, whose role is essential in verifying facts and ensuring access to reliable information are increasingly exposed to threats\, harassment and intimidation. Where journalists are unsafe\, disinformation spreads more easily\, public trust declines and democratic participation weakens. \nThe initiative Youth Facing Disinformation – Why Journalists Matter\, supported under the Monaco Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe\, places young people at the centre of efforts to defend freedom of expression\, information integrity and democratic resilience. \nOrganised under the Council of Europe’s Journalists Matter Campaign\, in cooperation with the Youth Department’s project Youth Revitalising Democracy\, the Strasbourg event will bring together selected grantees\, young participants\, journalists\, media creators\, policymakers and experts. It will combine a high-level conference with thematic workshops on disinformation\, media literacy\, journalist safety and youth engagement. \nThe event will also provide a platform for selected grantees to present their projects\, exchange with peers and experts\, and explore visibility\, dissemination and partnership opportunities. These discussions will support outreach and impact\, while the funded projects remain fully defined and under the responsibility of the selected grantees

SUMMARY:Digital Competition Conference 2027
DESCRIPTION:The rapid diffusion of AI and the emergence of AI agents capable of independently accessing tools\, initiating processes\, and acting on users’ behalf may fundamentally reshape how information and economic activity are organized online. These developments are raising new questions about market power\, entry\, innovation\, and control across the technology stack. At the same time\, the regulatory and enforcement disputes that have defined competition policy in tech in recent years continue to evolve\, as the implications of incumbent platform power become increasingly consequential. \nThe Digital Competition Conference 2027 (DCC ‘27)\, taking place February 9-10\, 2027 in Washington\, DC\, will examine all of these developments through a broad inquiry into competition in digital markets. Building on the success of DCC ‘26 – which brought together participants from 37 countries – the conference will continue to serve as a forum for rigorous\, interdisciplinary discussion on the future of competition in the digital economy across key sectors and jurisdictions. The conference aims to advance a shared understanding of competition in AI and digital markets among researchers\, policymakers\, regulators\, business\, litigators\, technologists\, and civil society experts. \nDiscussion will center on research results and methods\, what stakeholders know and still need to learn about competition challenges and remedies\, and how to create a virtuous cycle where research more effectively informs policymaking and enforcement while regulation enables more effective research. The conference will feature research talks and policy discussions focused on a range of technology markets – as they have been traditionally offered\, and as they are being reshaped by AI – including markets for search\, chatbots\, and AI assistants; consumer and enterprise software\, including browsers\, apps\, harnesses\, and cloud services; advertising; social media; messaging; and connected devices.
