DESCRIPTION:Data & Society presents its first-ever collaboration with Brooklyn Public Library in this online talk with historian Jill Lepore\, who will discuss her new book If Then\, a story of “trying to understand human behavior via algorithm\, and the corrosive consequences of trying to hack democracy.” (Booklist). This talk is hosted by Data & Society Founder and President danah boyd\, who also serves on the board of the Social Science Research Council. \nThe Simulmatics Corporation\, launched during the Cold War\, mined data\, targeted voters\, manipulated consumers\, destabilized politics\, and disordered knowledge―decades before Facebook\, Google\, and Cambridge Analytica. Lepore\, best-selling author of These Truths\, came across the company’s papers in MIT’s archives and set out to tell this forgotten history\, the long-lost backstory to the methods\, and the arrogance\, of Silicon Valley. \nFounded in 1959 by some of the nation’s leading social scientists―“the best and the brightest\, fatally brilliant\, Icaruses with wings of feathers and wax\, flying to the sun”―Simulmatics proposed to predict and manipulate the future by way of the computer simulation of human behavior. In summers\, with their wives and children in tow\, the company’s scientists met on the beach in Long Island under a geodesic\, honeycombed dome\, where they built a “People Machine” that aimed to model everything from buying a dishwasher to counterinsurgency to casting a vote. Deploying their “People Machine” from New York\, Washington\, Cambridge\, and even Saigon\, Simulmatics’ clients included the John F. Kennedy presidential campaign\, the New York Times\, the Department of Defense\, and others: Simulmatics had a hand in everything from political races to the Vietnam War to the Johnson administration’s ill-fated attempt to predict race riots. The scientists of Simulmatics believed they had invented “the A-bomb of the social sciences.” They did not predict that it would take decades to detonate\, like a long-buried grenade. But\, in the early years of the twenty-first century\, that bomb did detonate\, creating a world in which corporations collect data and model behavior and target messages about the most ordinary of decisions\, leaving people all over the world\, long before the global pandemic\, crushed by feelings of helplessness. This history has a past; If Then is its cautionary tale. \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History and Affiliate Professor of Law at Harvard University. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker\, and host of the podcast\, The Last Archive. Her many books include These Truths: A History of the United States (2018)\, an international bestseller and was named one of Time magazine’s top ten non-fiction books of the decade. SUMMARY:Follow the Ad: Uncovering Election Interference behind Data-Driven Digital Platforms | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:Election interference raises grave normative concerns. Unfortunately\, due to conceptual and methodological challenges\, little scientific knowledge has been generated about election interference. This talk discusses the mechanisms by which election interference occurred and the extent to which it influenced the electorate. The talk presents Kim’s research on covert digital campaigns by unidentifiable\, unattributable groups ahead of the 2016 US elections. Kim’s analysis is based on large-scale political ad data that her team\, Project DATA (Digital Ad Tracking & Analysis)\, collected independently from tech platforms by utilizing a user-based\, real-time\, ad-tracking tool and “reverse engineering” techniques. Kim’s research uncovers the prevalence of foreign and domestic “suspicious” groups (i.e.\, unidentifiable\, unattributable\, untraceable groups that do not leave any public footprint) and their targeting\, messaging\, and organizational strategies and tactics (e.g.\, voter suppression and asymmetric [de]mobilization). Furthermore\, it reveals the structure of covert coordination that facilitated the deep penetration of election interference campaigns into the electorate. DESCRIPTION:Imagine living in a society in which most of the land and buildings available for meeting and working were owned by a few for-profit corporations. Churches\, governments\, groups of friends\, schools\, nonprofits\, and grassroots social movements would each have to reserve space on — or have a key to — a privately-owned facility\, often on a large corporate campus\, in order to meet and work together. It would be a society with no domed capitol buildings\, city halls\, temples\, open campuses\, public parks\, community centers\, or nonprofit spaces. \nFortunately\, this is not the society we live in\, but it does describe the online spaces where our digital information is stored and where much of contemporary life – including civil society action – now takes place.
