SUMMARY:What is the Cloud Doing to the Internet? | WZB
DESCRIPTION:The future of the Internet is (in) the cloud. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS)\, rather than platforms like X or Meta\, will become the tech industry’s most powerful players. To the extent this is not already the case\, the choices of these cloud companies will influence what our wired world looks like\, including our much-beloved (and much-reviled) Internet.  In other words\, the growing importance of cloud computing for networking and connectivity will impact the future of the public Internet. In this talk\, I will present some preliminary findings from my ongoing ethnographic research on the impact of the cloud industry on the Internet at the University of Delft and pair that with insights from my Ph.D. research on Internet governance. I will draw out how critical Internet governance services are increasingly moving onto the cloud and turning towards the delivery of industry\, rather than consumer\, services. I will use these various insights and build on existing literature in the field (Volker 2021\, Todd 2020\, etc) to speculate on the future of the Internet as we know it. DESCRIPTION:In May 2024\, the Internet Democracy Initiative will host an Internet and Society Conference at the Northeastern University-London campus. Like the IDI\, the conference will focus on the role of the internet in structuring democracy\, society\, and markets with emphasis on areas that have widespread information and social media implications. Conference sessions will feature academic\, industry\, and government experts engaging with one another across five thematic areas: \n\n\n\nmisinformation\,\nmedia narratives\,\ncyber governance and cyber resilience\,\nAI governance and regulations\, and\ndata access and ethics.\n\nThe goal of the conference is to further collaborations that can bring about the types of changes that the IDI imagines. Across the sessions\, speakers and participants will be asked to consider mechanisms to ensure that historically excluded voices are represented\, amplified\, and considered in data structures and decision-making processes.

DESCRIPTION:Strange as it may seem\, Big Tech has become feminist. Meta has a team devoted to women’s safety. Venmo monitors its app for gender-based discrimination. Bumble aspires to make misogyny illegal. And it’s not just talk: Big Tech is putting its money where its mouth is\, devoting significant time and resources to achieving a feminist agenda. This talk interrogates the emergence of Big Tech feminism\, sounding alarms about its tendencies and implications before offering a competing path. In particular\, we confront a phenomenon we call “safety creep\,” whereby a network of feminists\, tech companies\, and lawmakers repurpose valid feminist concerns about sex harms to expansively control online sexual activity\, including harmless sex acts with great emancipatory potential. Safety creep empowers companies and lawmakers to push ostensibly feminist projects that would\, in fact\, undermine competing values of protecting pleasure\, enhancing freedom\, and disempowering discourses that produce unnecessary harm. In response\, this talk advances a competing feminist agenda. At a time when safety has become the dominant framework for platform governance and legislation\, we argue that safety is best served by cultivating autonomy and more egalitarian power distributions to set the norms of sexual encounters\, instead of the punitive and prudish approaches that Big Tech currently embraces. \n[…]

DESCRIPTION:Women of color candidates continue to be underrepresented in Congress while also facing significant challenges in running for office. One of these challenges includes the kinds of offensive and hate speech they are subject to on social media platforms. In this research briefing\, we will share findings from a new study conducted by the Online Violence Against Women in Politics Working Group at the Ford Institute for Human Security at the University of Pittsburgh\, the Politus Project\, and the Center for Democracy & Technology. The analysis focuses on posts on X/Twitter targeting all candidates running for a Congressional seat in the 2024 U.S. elections\, as well as Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. SUMMARY:The EU Code of Practice on disinformation: evaluating VLOPSE compliance and effectiveness
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Trisha Meyer (co-author) will present the findings of the recently published EDMO report on the compliance and effectiveness of Very Large Online Platforms and Search Engines’ (VLOPSE) actions to implement the Code of Practice (now Code of Conduct) on Disinformation\, focusing on Meta (Facebook and Instagram)\, Google (Search and YouTube)\, Microsoft (Bing and LinkedIn)\, and TikTok. Large online platforms submit transparency reports twice a year\, detailing their efforts to meet commitments under the Code. The report focuses on key areas such as supporting media literacy\, enhancing fact-checking partnerships\, improving transparency\, and enabling research\, as reported in 2024. The assessment examines the extent to which these seven VLOPSE services have met core commitments under the CoPD and evaluates the real-world impact of selected actions and initiatives taken under the Code. \n  \nSpeaker \nTrisha Meyer | Professor in Digital Governance and Participation; Co-Lead·Vrije Universiteit Brussel; EDMO BELUX \n\nTrisha Meyer is an Associate Professor in Digital Governance and Participation at the Brussels School of Governance of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, where she leads the Research Centre for Digitalisation\, Democracy and Innovation. Trisha is also principal investigator of EDMO BELUX\, a co-funded hub on research\, fact-checking and media literacy on online disinformation in Belgium and Luxembourg. Trisha researches the regulatory push toward and societal consequences of tech platforms taking proactive (automated) measures to moderate online content. A second closely related research strand pertains to participatory governance in digital policy. In recent years\, her research has focused on the balancing act necessary when developing responses to tackle disinformation online.

Attendees will generate a research agenda to understand and guide the evolution in a positive direction and to bring attention to regional AI capabilities. RTI International and Elon University are co-presenting this conference at RTI’s headquarters. \nThe conference will examine topics related to education\, workforce\, and labor; human agency and creativity; mental and physical health and well-being; and AI governance and democracy. With support from Burroughs Wellcome Fund\, the Knight Foundation\, and Schmidt Sciences\, the program is organized by the Imagining the Digital Future Center at Elon University\, and RTI International’s Fellows Program and University Collaboration Office. \nRegistration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance.
