SUMMARY:Credible threat: Attacks against women online and the future of democracy | Centre for Research in Communication and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Activists. Journalists. Elected Representatives. Public Intellectuals. When women are vocal about political and social issues\, too-often they are flogged with attacks via social networking sites\, comment sections\, discussion boards\, email\, and direct message. Rather than targeting their ideas\, the abuse targets their identities\, pummeling them with rape threats\, attacks on their appearance and presumed sexual behavior\, and a cacophony of misogynistic\, racist\, xenophobic\, and homophobic stereotypes and epithets. Identity-based attacks are particularly severe for those women from racial\, ethnic\, and religious minority groups or who work in domains dominated by men. Feminists and women who challenge traditional gender norms are also frequently targeted. This toxicity comes with economic\, professional\, and psychological costs for those targeted\, but it also exacts societal-level costs that are rarely recognized: it erodes civil liberties\, diminishes our public discourse\, thins the knowledge available to inform policy and electoral decision-making\, and teaches women that activism and public service are high-risk endeavors to be avoided. Sobieraj traces these underexplored effects\, showing that when identity-based attacks succeed in constraining women’s use of digital publics\, there are democratic consequences that cannot be ignored. \n[…]

News websites have financial incentives to spread disinformation\, in order to increase their online traffic and\, ultimately\, their advertising revenue. Meanwhile\, the dissemination of disinformation has disruptive and impactful consequences. The COVID-19 pandemic offers a recent example. By disrupting society’s shared sense of accepted facts\, these narratives undermine public health\, safety and government responses. \nTo combat ad-funded disinformation\, the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) deploys its assessment framework to rate news domains’ risk of disinforming their readers. These independent\, trusted and neutral ratings are used by advertisers\, ad tech companies and platforms\, to redirect their online ad spending in line with their brand safety and disinformation risk mitigation strategies. \nGDI defines disinformation as ‘adversarial narratives that create real world harm’\, and the GDI risk rating provides information about a range of indicators related to the risk that a given news website will disinform its readers by spreading these adversarial narratives. DESCRIPTION:In Visions of Beirut\, Hatim El-Hibri explores how the creation and circulation of images has shaped the urban spaces and cultural imaginaries of Beirut. Drawing on fieldwork and texts ranging from maps\, urban plans\, and aerial photographs to live television and drone-camera footage\, El-Hibri traces the histories of how the technologies and media infrastructure that visualize the city are used to consolidate or destabilize regimes of power. \nThroughout the twentieth century\, colonial\, economic\, and military mapping projects helped produce and govern its spaces. In the 1990s\, the imagery of its post-civil war downtown reconstruction cast Beirut as a site of financial investment in ways that obscured its ongoing crises. During and following the 2006 Israel/Hizbullah war\, Hizbullah’s use of live television broadcasts of fighting and protests along with its construction of a war memorial museum at a former secret military bunker demonstrate the tension between visualizing space and the practices of concealment. \nOutlining how Beirut’s urban space and public life intertwine with images and infrastructure\, El-Hibri interrogates how media embody and exacerbate the region’s political fault lines. \n[…] \n

DESCRIPTION:This workshop starts from the premise that the problem of online misinformation is a symptom\, not a cause. While undeniably problematic\, misinformation is the current cause célèbre of a larger class of pathological dynamics that have emerged in our evolving digital media ecosystems and cause harm at different systemic levels. These dynamics are exacerbated by many aspects of our evolving digital infrastructure\, including the affordances of different media platforms\, algorithmic filters\, the loss of trusted gatekeepers\, the attention economy\, and ever evolving modes of journalism. Additionally\, cognitive factors as well as offline social structures\, including systems of oppression\, play an enormous role in shaping the consensual realities that emerge in digital spaces. \nThis is a wicked problem\, and while many dimensions of the problem have been examined\, a more complete articulation requires the synthesis of insights from scholars across many disciplines.
