DESCRIPTION:The Coronavirus pandemic is on the verge of a turning point\, as the rollout of vaccination programs worldwide brings hope that the disease may finally start to recede. However\, public confidence in vaccine programmes cannot be taken for granted: and in many countries the number of people willing to take a vaccine is lower than the threshold required for herd immunity. One reason for this lack of confidence is the continued influence of the worldwide ‘anti-vaxx’ movement\, which is gaining increasing prominence through its use of social media. \n\n\nAnti-vaccination communities are highly organised on social media and make use of a web of counterfeit news sites to spread misleading health information. They promote narratives that vaccines are harmful\, alter DNA and deployed in order to control people. And outlets that spread foreign state backed propaganda push their own narratives about failing government responses in Europe and miracle cures developed in Russia and China. This information has already contributed to undermining public trust in the Covid-19 vaccines. \n\n\nIn this talk\, we present our most recent research into anti-vaccination communities on social media and their content. This research helps to understand how anti-vaxx content producers operate and how they spread and monetise their content. In our talk\, we offer some quantitative measurements of the anti-vaxx problem\, and review how content spreads on different platforms. We also explain how the producers of this content make money from anti-vaxx ideas\, and offer recommendations and solutions to policymakers and practitioners working in the field of platform governance.

SUMMARY:The Contagion of Stigmatization: Racism and Discrimination in the “Infodemic” Moment | Digital Society Network
DESCRIPTION:This talk discusses the “secondary contagion” of racism (Chen et al 2020) and other forms of social stigmatization unleashed by the coronavirus outbreak in global context. I begin with a critique of how cultural biases in journalistic reporting and official speech have often reinforced racial prejudices and hierarchies and contributed to the stigmatization and shaming of marginalized communities. I then identify the intentional media manipulation practiced by politicians and authoritarian governments targeting vulnerable groups\, opportunistically using fears of the virus and fears of “fake news” to seize political control. Drawing on my own ethnographic work and policy engagement in the Southeast Asian disinformation space\, I discuss challenges of moderating and mitigating online expressions which crossover from disinformation to racist speech. I end with a reflection on how scholars conducting risky research can better support each other\, manage the mental health impacts of research in COVID times\, and develop new tools for community solidarity and allyship. \n[…]

DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, digital media are analyzed as a key battlefield in the intense cultural and political conflict between feminists and misogynists that has been playing out in South Korea since 2013. Drawing on textual\, discursive\, and institutional analyses of digital media platforms and interviews with feminist activists\, Kim shows how new modes of feminist activism on and offline have contested the pervasive misogyny in the country by increasing public interest in gender issues and extending the reach of feminism. Foregrounding the concept of “sticky activism\,” which encompasses affect\, media capacity\, and participants’ activities\, she argues that these efforts have contributed to the formation of affective feminist counterpublics that have served to articulate gendered discontent with misogynistic culture and society\, to contest and challenge deep-seated gender violence\, and to develop new feminist subjectivities. \n[…]

DESCRIPTION:C+J 2021 — A virtual gathering\nFrom the outset\, 2020 looked like it would be a year of data and computation in journalism. Think of the events that were planned — from the 2020 Presidential Election to the decennial census\, to the Summer Olympics\, to the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. Each of these stories had rich possibilities for collaborations between journalism and the computing and data sciences. Tragically\, as we know well\, an even bigger story dominates the news\, COVID-19. As the full force of the pandemic continues to unfold\, we see that it is a story also told in data\, in models\, and in predictions — helping the public make critical decisions about the health of their families and communities. \nThe Computation+Journalism (C+J) conference is a venue where journalists and researchers meet. It is a setting where news organizations can learn about new methods to source\, produce and distribute their journalism\, and where researchers in the computational and social sciences learn about important open questions that news organizations are struggling with\, from business models to database technologies\, to new frameworks for data visualization. \nLike most meetings of its kind\, C+J has historically been an in-person affair. DESCRIPTION:There are competing accounts for the partisan divisions occurring throughout American life.  One is that they are genuine divides due to a strengthened sense of partisan identity. The other is that they reflect partisan cheerleading—insincere support for the “home team” when there is little cost to doing so. We assess the applicability of these claims to political misinformation in the post-Trump era.  We test between these alternatives with experiments that offer incentives for correct survey responses and allow respondents to search for information before answering each question. We find that partisan cheerleading inflates informational divides modestly and incentives have no impact on partisan divides in information search. \n[…]
