DESCRIPTION:“We are delighted to welcome Zoë Glatt for an OxDEG talk on ‘An (auto)ethnography of YouTube creators’ labour in the online video industry’ \nIn the late 2000’s a new and exciting cultural phenomenon was bubbling under the surface. Around the world\, teens in their bedrooms were turning on their webcams to film asynchronous conversations with unknown audiences and uploading them to YouTube. Online communities started to flourish on the platform and new genres began to crystallise: vlogs\, tutorials\, comedy sketches\, video responses. In these early years being a ‘YouTuber’ was not yet a viable career and creator culture mainly flew under the radar of mainstream media organisations\, or else was viewed as trivial or insignificant. Since then\, we have seen the rise a new and powerful cross-platform creative industry. What began as pockets of amateur creators on YouTube has grown into a mature infrastructure of diverse and competing platforms\, such as Instagram\, TikTok\, Patreon\, Facebook and Twitch\, that combine online video and social networking affordances with opportunities for content creators to earn an income. \nShifting patterns of employment in the creative industries away from stable structures\, and the emergence of a new neoliberal worker-subject: entrepreneurial\, flexible\, self-directed and always available to work\, has been the topic of much academic scrutiny over the past decade (Gill 2010; Gill and Pratt 2008; Ross 2009; McRobbie 2016; Schlesinger 2016). Studies of this type of work have highlighted the collapse of boundaries between work and play\, intermittent and precarious income\, and a passionate attachment to work and the identity of creative labour (Erin-Duffy 2017). The platform-native online video industry offers new sociocultural and economic formations of creative labour\, fraught with ambivalence and precarity\, that require critical scrutiny. In particular\, the imperative for content creators to diversify income streams across multiple platforms\, brand deals\, merch and tour sales\, advertising revenue and crowdfunding\, all whilst scrutinising popularity metrics and audience feedback\, marks an extension of the neoliberal worker subjectivity. \nIn order to research the lived experiences and labour of aspiring and professional YouTube content creators\, I concluded that it was insufficient to merely watch\, like and comment on videos; I needed to become a YouTuber myself. In this talk\, as well as discussing my preliminary findings\, I reflect on my journey and experiences of using this experimental digital ethnographic method\, in addition to multi-sited online/offline fieldwork and interviews with content creators. As social media platforms have increasingly profound sociocultural impacts\, researchers need to find new methodological tools for engaging critically with this changing landscape. Autoethnography has provided me with significant insights into the labour of online creators\, from the ways in which they understand and navigate algorithms\, channel metrics and the multi-platform environment\, to the emotional highs and lows of trying to cultivate an audience.”

DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header  \n\n\n“The powerful have long agreed: Poor and working people must be watched. \nWith the proliferation of digital monitoring and algorithmic management of gig economy and blue collar workers\, it might seem like the expansion of workplace surveillance is a new trend. In reality\, it is a centuries-old phenomenon that has shaped core aspects of modern privacy debates. From English Poor Laws\, to the monitoring of 19th century coal miners and 20th century farmworker advocates\, to contemporary efforts to track workers in the digital economy\, this conference will follow the surveillance of poor and working people and those who advocate for them. \nHow has the myth of the untrustworthy pauper or worker transformed over time? What role has race and ethnicity played in justifying surveillance? Has this surveillance proven effective or not? How has technology normalized and propogated this surveillance? Finally\, how are local communities\, advocates\, and artists responding to these challenges? \nThe Color of Surveillance addresses these questions and more\, elevating the voices of working people\, labor advocates\, artists\, and historians. Through panels and discussion\, this symposium will explore topics such as: \n\nThe deployment of surveillance technologies in the face of well-documented error rates when analyzing communities of color\, and the ways in which their unchecked use threatens to obscure and automate racial inequalities under the guise of unbiased computer systems;\n\n\nThe need to analyze the use of surveillance tools in the context of well-established racial biases in policing\, which has knock-on effects on the criminal justice system;\n\n\nIssues raised by using surveillance technologies in tandem\, such as their exacerbated impact on communities of color and the creation of a pervasive dragnet that is incompatible with a democratic society; and\n\n\nThe different approaches to regulation\, including outright bans (enacted for facial recognition in cities such as San Francisco and Somerville\, MA)\, efforts to pass transparency measures (enacted in cities such as Seattle and Nashville\, TN)\, and the role of inspector general audits (influential reports in Los Angeles and Chicago).”\n\n\n\n\n\n

It is where people turn for civic information\, engage in political discourse public and private\, and turn to mobilize collectively. The virtual structures of the Internet are\, in some ways\, quite distinct from what preceded; and in other ways\, they reproduce and amplify those pre-existing patterns. The Internet can be the ultimate disseminator of misinformation; as well as the ultimate educator. People have at their fingertips more diverse sources of information than ever before; yet many of the institutions for the production of political and civic information are being eviscerated. This talk will discuss the informational and social logics of the Internet– what is our democracy\, today?– how they support and undermine democracy\, and concludes with a discussion of what structures and practices we need from the Internet to support democracy\, today. \nBIO: Northeastern University Professor David Lazer’s research focuses on the nexus of network science\, computational social science\, and collaborative intelligence. He is the founder of the citizen science website Volunteer Science. His research has been published in such journals as Science\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science\, the American Political Science Review\, and the Administrative Science Quarterly\, and has received extensive coverage in the media\, including the New York Times\, NPR\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, and CBS Evening News.”

Rand is the Erwin H. Schell Professor and an Associate Professor of Management Science and Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT Sloan\, and the Director of the Human Cooperation Laboratory and the Applied Cooperation Team. \nBridging the fields of behavioral economics and psychology\, David’s research combines mathematical/computational models with human behavioral experiments and online/field studies to understand human behavior. His work uses a cognitive science perspective grounded in the tension between more intuitive versus deliberative modes of decision-making\, and explores topics such as cooperation/prosociality\, punishment/condemnation\, perceived accuracy of false or misleading news stories\, political preferences\, and the dynamics of social media platform behavior. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such Nature\, Science\, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America\, the American Economic Review\, Psychological Science\, and Management Science.
