SUMMARY:2022 Midterms: NYU's CSMaP Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Facebook and Twitter: The Impact of New and Niche Platforms \nFor years\, Facebook and Twitter dominated scholarly research about the social media landscape. But in the last few years\, new video-based social networks and alt-platforms have emerged. How do these platforms fit into the broader online ecosystem and what impact could they have in 2022? This seminar will present new research on YouTube’s recommendation algorithm\, political communications on TikTok\, and the right-wing platforms Gab\, Gettr\, Parler\, and Truth Social. \n[…]

SUMMARY:2022 Midterms: NYU's CSMaP Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Generation Gap: Why the Baby Boomers Still Dominate American Politics and Culture \nThe Baby Boomers are the largest and most powerful generation in recent American history. They dominate cultural and political institutions and make up the largest slice of the electorate. They’re also\, on average\, whiter\, wealthier\, and more conservative than younger generations\, placing them increasingly at odds with those voters. \nIn this seminar\, Penn State University Assistant Professor and CSMaP Faculty Affiliate Kevin Munger will discuss his new book\, which marshals novel data and survey evidence to argue that generational conflict will define the politics of the next decade. Munger examines the historical trends that made the Baby Boomers so consequential\, traces the emergence of age-based political and cultural divisions\, and explains how a shared identity and purpose among Millennials and Gen Z could topple Boomer power. Particular focus will be placed on how age impacts and is impacted by the new media environment. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Charlotte Alter\, a senior correspondent at TIME covering politics and social issues. She is also author of The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of Leaders Will Transform America\, which chronicles how the unique political and economic circumstances of millennial youth have shaped their political leanings\, and how they’re pushing back against Boomer dominance. \n[…]

SUMMARY:CDCS Book Talk: Asta Zelenkauskaitė\, Drexel University
DESCRIPTION:With the prevalence of disinformation geared to instill doubt rather than clarity\,Creating Chaos Online\, unmasks disinformation when it attempts to pass as deliberation in the public sphere and distorts the democratic processes. \nDr. Zelenkauskaitė finds that repeated tropes justifying Russian trolling were found to circulate across not only all analyzed media platforms’ comments\, but also across two analyzed sociopolitical contexts suggesting the orchestrated efforts behind messaging. \nThrough a dystopian vision of publics that are expected to navigate in the sea of uncertain both authentic and orchestrated content\, pushed by human and nonhuman actors\, Creating Chaos Online offers a concept of post-publics. The idea of post-publics is reflected within the continuum of treatment of public\, counter public\, and anti-public. This book argues that affect-instilled arguments used in public deliberation in times of uncertainty\, along with whataboutism constitute a playbook for chaos online. \n[…]

SUMMARY:2022 Midterms: NYU Center for Social Media & Politics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Media Consumption\, Misinformation\, and Polarization \nSocial media has transformed the media and political landscape\, but the vast majority of Americans still get their news from traditional sources such as local TV\, cable TV\, radio\, and newspapers. As the media environment continues to fracture\, how does news consumption and social media behavior affect how voters think about and engage in politics? This seminar will present new research on media consumption and the spread of misinformation in both English and Spanish\, the effects of partisan media on viewers’ beliefs and attitudes\, and the effect of media coverage on perceptions of political polarization. \n[…]\n

SUMMARY:Librarians and Misinformation: Curating the Information Needs of Communities | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:While trust in political institutions rapidly deteriorates and the technology and media companies that we rely on repeatedly fail to meet our information needs\, the public still overwhelmingly trusts libraries. That’s because librarians fulfill a service mission as community information stewards–long serving as the only place people can go for free internet access\, computer instruction\, books and access to critical government resources. \nAs the information needs of communities have expanded from a crisis of access to a crisis of trust\, librarians help patrons discern fact from fiction online and increasingly find themselves defending decisions about which books and information to carry and which to pull. The curatorial decisions of libraries have been shoved into the fray of polarized cultural and political debates about how to educate about racism in public schools\, how to provide community resources on queerness\, and whether or not to carry literature that promotes hate. \nMeanwhile\, debates rage about how tech companies and governments can regulate and retool our information ecosystems to keep communities safe and informed. Including the perspective of librarians in these conversations is essential to keeping solutions grounded in serving the information needs of our communities. \n[…]

SUMMARY:The Tech That Comes Next: How Changemakers\, Philanthropists\, and Technologists Can Build an Equitable World | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:Who is part of technology development\, who funds that development\, and how we put technology to use all influence the outcomes that are possible. To change those outcomes\, we must—all of us—shift our relationship to technology—how we use it\, build it\, fund it\, and more. \nJoin us for a fireside chat featuring Afua Bruce\, Sue Hendrickson\, and Amritha Jayanti\, who will discuss the future role and applications of the technology pushing the social impact sector forward. \nTheir conversation will explore the implications of the use\, creation\, and funding of technology and how social impact organizations\, technologists\, funders\, policymakers\, and—most importantly—communities can accelerate change for the better. \nThe Berkman Klein Center is pleased to present this event in collaboration with the Belfer Center to highlight the Technology and Public Purpose (TAPP) Project and Bruce’s new book (with Amy Sample Ward) The Tech That Comes Next. \n[…]

SUMMARY:The Tower and the Park: Structural Misalignments of Social Media | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for this virtual event by Monday\, May 16\, 3:00 PM ET. \nZuccotti Park\, the site of Occupy Wall Street\, and One Liberty Plaza\, the multi-billion-dollar tower\, represent a complex power play between public and private interests. In the digital realm\, social media grapples with a similar contention: social networks would not exist without platform businesses and yet their public benefits are at odds with the drive for private profit. \nJoin us for a special Berkman Klein Center Luncheon featuring Joanne Cheung\, who will discuss her research and open access article Real Estate Politik: Democracy and the Financialization of Social Networks\, which emerged from the Berkman Klein Ethical Tech Working Group and was originally published in a special issue of the Journal of Social Computing\, “Technology Ethics in Action: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives” (Part 1\, Part 2). \nCheung argues that “social networks are privately owned public spaces caught between the misaligned incentives of public good and private profit” and that their business models perpetuate historical inequities. \nCheung’s article also explores the structural problems with social media from the perspective of land use. She compares the financialization of attention by platforms with the financialization of land by commercial real estate development—and explores activist land use models for public interest technology. \nRSVP \nRSVP for this virtual event by Monday\, May 16\, 3:00 PM ET. \n[…]

SUMMARY:CARGC Colloquium: EU Futures in the Disinformation Age | Annenberg Center for Communication
DESCRIPTION:The concatenation of European crises shows major transformations in the contemporary international arena and points to the reasons for a structural change in the modes and uses of European public diplomacy\, both inside and outside of EU institutions. Since 2008\, European institutions have learned to live in a state of crisis and response: the Eurozone crisis (2008)\, the Ukrainian issue (2014)\, the refugee movement (2015)\, the Brexit referendum (2016)\, the new transatlantic relationship (2017)\, and the COVID19 pandemic (2019). Each of these situations has caused a tremendous amount of stress and strain that has tested institutions and offered a lesson in international political communication as well. \nBut what’s new in the current Russian crisis? What’s the role of disinformation in the EU future? Why is disinformation recognized as the “biggest challenge and threat” to the EU power? In this context\, the construction of the enlightened dream of the EU is fading in the biggest political and economic crisis of its history. The fight against disinformation will be decisive in the future of the EU based not only on rational arguments\, but also on other attributes of public communication and political leadership. There is reason for hope. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Operationalizing responsible AI | The Brookings Institution
DESCRIPTION:There is widespread agreement among ethicists and tech advocates that responsible AI principles requires fairness\, transparency\, privacy\, human safety\, and explanability. But it is not always clear how to operationalize these broad principles or how to handle situations when conflicts arise between them. Moving from the abstract to the concrete when developing algorithms often presents challenges as a focus on one goal can come at the detriment of alternative objectives. \nOn April 5\, the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings will host an expert panel that will cover ways to operationalize responsible AI and move toward more concrete standards. Panelists will also discuss how to design appropriate algorithms and build technical capacity in the workforce. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Resisting and Reversing Western Media Imperialism?: Turkey’s Global Communication Outlets | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Since the 2010s\, Turkey’s ruling AKP government has vastly expanded its global communication apparatus to promote the country as a rising great power and the benevolent guardian of Muslims. In this presentation\, Bilge Yesil will analyze the political mechanisms and ideational frameworks that underlie the new English-language outlets the AKP and its proxies developed after the Gezi Park protests of 2013 — an event they interpreted as a Western ploy to overthrow the Erdogan government. In the post-Gezi period\, critical coverage of Erdogan soared in international news media and the AKP sought to rebuff them via newly-established print\, broadcast and digital outlets. Drawing on an analysis of official statements and government documents as well as interviews with media professionals that work/ed at state-run and pro-AKP news media\, Yesil argues that the Erdogan government views the global communication landscape as yet another battlefield in the ostensible conflict they posit between East and West\, and Western journalists as emissaries of imperialism. With all this in mind\, Yesil explores how the AKP conceptualizes its global communication machinery as a counter-hegemonic force and discuss the implications of the type of journalism its proxies perform. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Roundtable: Ukraine and Content Moderation for News Media Sustainability | Annenberg School of Communication
DESCRIPTION:From combatting violent extremism to mitigating misinformation\, the news industry is caught in the middle of debates over how best to address a range of online harms. As regulators around the world consider new frameworks for content moderation\, it is important to understand how efforts to reduce harmful content online can be detrimental to free and critical media. Stringent moderation can result in the removal or demonetization of journalism\, which harms not only the sustainability of news media but also detracts from efforts to reduce disinformation and “fake news.” This roundtable will look critically at these problems and discuss how initiatives such as the Global Alliance for Responsible Media\, Ads for News and other collaborations between the private sector\, media and tech platforms are impacting news media and what we can learn from these types of voluntary\, self-regulatory approaches. This event is co-sponsored with UCLA’s Institute for Technology\, Law & Policy. \n[…]

SUMMARY:CDCS Colloquium: All the News That's Fit to Click | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Journalists today are inundated with data about which stories attract the most clicks\, likes\, comments\, and shares. These metrics influence what stories are written\, how news is promoted\, and even which journalists get hired and fired. Do metrics make journalists more accountable to the public? Or are these data tools the contemporary equivalent of a stopwatch wielded by a factory boss\, worsening newsroom working conditions and journalism quality? In All the News That’s Fit to Click\, Caitlin Petre takes readers behind the scenes at the New York Times\, Gawker\, and the prominent news analytics company Chartbeat to explore how performance metrics are transforming the work of journalism. \nPetre describes how digital metrics are a powerful but insidious new form of managerial surveillance and discipline. Many journalists get hooked on metrics—and pressure themselves to work ever harder to boost their numbers. Yet this is not a simple story of managerial domination. Contrary to the typical perception of metrics as inevitably disempowering\, Petre shows how some journalists leverage metrics to their advantage\, using them to advocate for their professional worth and autonomy. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Keynote: Free Speech in the Age of Misinformation | Hart House at the University of Toronto
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Committee’s Keynote event addresses pathways for the preservation of free speech while mediating the harmful effects of misinformation in our present societies.\n\nFreedom of speech has long been considered a bastion of liberal\, open societies. However\, in the present era\, it is arguably no longer information that is scarce\, but our ability to process it. Misinformation\, trolling\, political division\, and mistrust in institutions have led us to ask: how can we\, as proponents of free speech in its ideal sense\, manage a marketplace of ideas riddled with lies? \nIn this event\, we bring together an American former ACLU president and law professor with a Canadian digital privacy expert and political scientist\, to delve into an interdisciplinary analysis of the present and future of free speech\, liberal discourse\, and the pursuit of truth in North America.

SUMMARY:Elihu Katz Colloquium: Dannagal G. Young (Ph.D. '07)\, University of Delaware | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:About the Talk\nThe extent to which we value intuitive or evidence-based reasoning has important implications for our susceptibility to misinformation. National survey data from Nov-Dec 2020 demonstrate that Trump favorability\, conservatism\, and Republicanism are associated with instinct-based epistemic values and a rejection of expertise and evidence. Results also indicate that these same epistemic motivations increase one’s likelihood of believing in misinformation in matters of both public and democratic health. Implications for democratic and public health will be discussed. \nMembers of the Annenberg community can pick up boxed lunches in Suite 200 prior to the event on a first come\, first served basis. \nAbout the Speaker\nDannagal G. Young (Ph.D. ’07) is a Professor of Communication and Political Science at the University of Delaware where she studies the content\, audience\, and effects of nontraditional political information. She has published over forty academic articles and book chapters on the content\, psychology\, appeal\, and effects of political information\, satire\, and misinformation.  Her book “Irony and Outrage“ (Oxford University Press\, 2020) examines satire and outrage as the logical extensions of the respective psychological profiles of liberals and conservatives.  Her current book project\, “Wrong: How Identity Fuels Misinformation and How to Fix It\,” is under development with JHU Press. \n[…]

SUMMARY:CARGC Colloquium: James Yékú\, University of Kansas | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:“Nigeria’s Twitter Ban and the Logic of Cultural Netizenship” \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE EVENT ON ZOOM \nAbout the Talk\nIts ban of Twitter in 2021 marked the Nigerian state as an analog entity that forbids the agency of its digital citizens. In this talk\, James Yékú will track the implications of this ban in the context of what he has called cultural netizenship\, the organizing rubric for visual articulations of internet citizenship that often manifests through the performance of popular culture in an ontologically visual social web. Unlike the normative signals of netizenship as a performance of citizenship and participatory politics online\, cultural netizenship evokes the deployment of visual and popular culture on social media to push back against the boundaries of hegemonic culture. Based on social media-enabled cultural productions that underpin meme culture as the most immediate and condensed mode of cultural and\, especially\, political commentary on digital media\, cultural netizenship as a reiteration of the generative materialism of African popular arts\, Yékú will argue\, is one notable and subversive practice in a complex system of relations between an analog state in Nigeria and digital subjects. \n[…]
