SUMMARY:Big Tech Feminism | WZB
DESCRIPTION:Strange as it may seem\, Big Tech has become feminist. Meta has a team devoted to women’s safety. Venmo monitors its app for gender-based discrimination. Bumble aspires to make misogyny illegal. And it’s not just talk: Big Tech is putting its money where its mouth is\, devoting significant time and resources to achieving a feminist agenda. This talk interrogates the emergence of Big Tech feminism\, sounding alarms about its tendencies and implications before offering a competing path. In particular\, we confront a phenomenon we call “safety creep\,” whereby a network of feminists\, tech companies\, and lawmakers repurpose valid feminist concerns about sex harms to expansively control online sexual activity\, including harmless sex acts with great emancipatory potential. Safety creep empowers companies and lawmakers to push ostensibly feminist projects that would\, in fact\, undermine competing values of protecting pleasure\, enhancing freedom\, and disempowering discourses that produce unnecessary harm. In response\, this talk advances a competing feminist agenda. At a time when safety has become the dominant framework for platform governance and legislation\, we argue that safety is best served by cultivating autonomy and more egalitarian power distributions to set the norms of sexual encounters\, instead of the punitive and prudish approaches that Big Tech currently embraces. \n[…]

SUMMARY:The Material Conditions of Platform Governance | Lab Platform Governance\, Media and Technology (PGMT)
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we present a methodological outlook for empirical and historical studies of platforms\, emphasizing their unique characteristics like programmability and multisidedness. We explore how web archives play a critical role in preserving bits of their past. Despite the challenges posed by the ephemerality and continuous updates of platforms\, we show how web archives manage to save valuable information about their historical development and past states of operations. These archived pages are key sources for crafting the life stories of technological artifacts\, including platforms and apps. \n[…]

SUMMARY:What is the Cloud Doing to the Internet? | WZB
DESCRIPTION:The future of the Internet is (in) the cloud. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS)\, rather than platforms like X or Meta\, will become the tech industry’s most powerful players. To the extent this is not already the case\, the choices of these cloud companies will influence what our wired world looks like\, including our much-beloved (and much-reviled) Internet.  In other words\, the growing importance of cloud computing for networking and connectivity will impact the future of the public Internet. In this talk\, I will present some preliminary findings from my ongoing ethnographic research on the impact of the cloud industry on the Internet at the University of Delft and pair that with insights from my Ph.D. research on Internet governance. I will draw out how critical Internet governance services are increasingly moving onto the cloud and turning towards the delivery of industry\, rather than consumer\, services. I will use these various insights and build on existing literature in the field (Volker 2021\, Todd 2020\, etc) to speculate on the future of the Internet as we know it. I will also open up the discussion on how key Internet regulations might need to be updated in light of these developments. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Preserving Digital Images and Data: Procedural\, Policy\, and Privacy Issues | Good Systems
DESCRIPTION:21st century media pose challenges to preserving the historical record. Collecting institutions need guidance and new strategies in order to save selective cellphone video\, GPS data\, and video from surveillance cameras\, drones\, and police bodycams. In this Talk\, Howard Besser will discuss how saving this type of material poses procedural\, policy\, and privacy issues. And he will demonstrate the ongoing tension between preservation and privacy. The presentation will include a case-study of preserving cellphone videos from the Occupy Movement\, and a close look at police body cam videos. \n[…]

SUMMARY:“Whose data is it anyway? Ethical\, practical\, and methodological challenges of data donation in messenger groups research” | WI Methods Lab
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, August 30th\, 2023\, 1–4 pm\nWhere: Weizenbaum Institute + Zoom (hybrid)\nRegistration: https://forms.gle/7NJngW7Ty4c8TWs3A \nMessaging applications\, such as WhatsApp\, Telegram\, and Signal\, are increasingly used for all forms of political communication. They became important venues for people to talk about political issues\, share news\, and communicate with governmental institutions. Unlike public pages of social networking cites\, closed messaging groups provided relatively intimate and controlled spaces\, where political discussions can trigger political participation and activism. Enhanced privacy of these closed spaces attracted political groups that range from protesters and activists in authoritarian regimes to far-right organizations in the democratic states. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Steering AI for the Public Good: A Dialogue for the Future | Institute for Advanced Study
DESCRIPTION:Recent\, rapid developments in artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment have demonstrated technology’s potential to drastically transform and potentially improve the lives of many people across the world. From unlocking millions of hours’ worth of biological research in a fraction of the time to reducing the amount of energy used by industrial power plants\, the use of AI could power the change needed to combat some of the most pressing issues of our time. But robust\, adaptive strategies\, including practices and policies\, are needed to ensure that AI technology will benefit all of humanity. Strategies to ensure that AI tools are developed and used responsibly must be a fundamental part of the development process rather than an afterthought. \n\n[…]

SUMMARY:“Weaponizing Misogyny”: Gender-Based Harassment’s Impact on Journalists and Free Expression | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:Whether they are reporting on gun violence\, covering protests in the post-Dobbs era\, or sharing information about COVID with the public\, journalists are on the frontlines\, bringing important issues to light. SUMMARY:Digital Policy Rounds: Mis/disinformation and the Question of Authenticity | Centre for Media\, Technology\, and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:While mis- and dis-information is primarily understood in terms of its facticity\, or lack thereof\, the very circulation of information such as news stories is tied to the cultural contexts in which people come to trust and rely on certain channels of information. Tackling misinformation\, then\, requires not just repudiation of its claims but an understanding of how and why its claims become significant — through what cultural channels — for certain groups of people. How do these channels influence what people will believe in their news and information consumption habits? How do recommender algorithms shape cultural channels that mark certain information as compelling? How does understanding the cultural sites of meaning-making help us address mis- and dis-information? \nThis panel seeks to surface the cultural dimensions of mis- and dis-information through the lens of authenticity: how claims to truthfulness and facticity are recognized as believable by communities\, and so how those claims are authenticated as truth or facts. Our panelists will discuss the historical\, technological\, and political aspects of claiming access to an authentic reality\, and how addressing mis- and dis-information through policy requires engaging culturally with those claims. \nRegister to receive the event Zoom link on the day of the event.

SUMMARY:Foreign Interference & Propaganda: What We Know and What to Expect | NYU Center for Social Media and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Since Russia’s attempt to interfere with the 2016 election\, the political and scholarly community has focused considerable attention on foreign influence in American politics. Researchers and media have investigated the scale and impact of Russia’s campaign\, and U.S. lawmakers are now increasingly concerned about national security risks surrounding China’s ownership of TikTok. What do we know about foreign influence since 2016 and how do we expect it to shift in the coming years? This virtual event brings together leading scholars to discuss how Russia and China have used traditional and digital media to shape global perceptions\, the role state-controlled agencies play in advancing propaganda\, and how tactics could continue to change heading into the 2024 election cycle. \nPanelists: \nRenée DiResta – Research Manager\, Stanford Internet Observatory \nKathleen Hall Jamieson – Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication\, University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication \nJennifer Pan – Professor of Communication\, Stanford University \nJoshua A. Tucker – Co-Director\, NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics (moderator) \nThis event is co-sponsored by the NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia.

SUMMARY:Essentially Unprotected: Health Data and the Surveillance of Essential Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic radically changed the lives of essential workers in America\, shifting the conditions\, timing\, equipment\, and spatial practices of their work\, and expanding surveillance inside the workplace. And while employers collected increasing amounts of data about workers’ health\, little of it was shared with workers themselves. The result was an information vacuum that left workers in the dark about their potential exposure and risk\, fueling immense anxiety and concern for themselves and those around them. \nData & Society’s forthcoming report Essentially Unprotected is based on interviews with 50 people who worked in grocery\, warehousing\, manufacturing\, or meat and food processing during the pandemic. The report highlights their experiences and efforts to manage the confusing and often terrifying challenges of the in-person pandemic workplace. \nIn this conversation\, we will examine the social\, economic\, and regulatory environment that laid the groundwork for serious information gaps surrounding infections. We will explore how technology contributed to the collection of data and worsened workers’ stress and frustration — and\, in select cases\, facilitated information-sharing that protected workers’ privacy and addressed their fears.

SUMMARY:2022 Midterms: NYU's CSMaP Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Generation Gap: Why the Baby Boomers Still Dominate American Politics and Culture \nThe Baby Boomers are the largest and most powerful generation in recent American history. They dominate cultural and political institutions and make up the largest slice of the electorate. They’re also\, on average\, whiter\, wealthier\, and more conservative than younger generations\, placing them increasingly at odds with those voters. \nIn this seminar\, Penn State University Assistant Professor and CSMaP Faculty Affiliate Kevin Munger will discuss his new book\, which marshals novel data and survey evidence to argue that generational conflict will define the politics of the next decade. Munger examines the historical trends that made the Baby Boomers so consequential\, traces the emergence of age-based political and cultural divisions\, and explains how a shared identity and purpose among Millennials and Gen Z could topple Boomer power. Particular focus will be placed on how age impacts and is impacted by the new media environment. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Charlotte Alter\, a senior correspondent at TIME covering politics and social issues. She is also author of The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of Leaders Will Transform America\, which chronicles how the unique political and economic circumstances of millennial youth have shaped their political leanings\, and how they’re pushing back against Boomer dominance. \n[…]

SUMMARY:CDCS Book Talk: Asta Zelenkauskaitė\, Drexel University
DESCRIPTION:With the prevalence of disinformation geared to instill doubt rather than clarity\,Creating Chaos Online\, unmasks disinformation when it attempts to pass as deliberation in the public sphere and distorts the democratic processes. \nDr. Zelenkauskaitė finds that repeated tropes justifying Russian trolling were found to circulate across not only all analyzed media platforms’ comments\, but also across two analyzed sociopolitical contexts suggesting the orchestrated efforts behind messaging. \nThrough a dystopian vision of publics that are expected to navigate in the sea of uncertain both authentic and orchestrated content\, pushed by human and nonhuman actors\, Creating Chaos Online offers a concept of post-publics. The idea of post-publics is reflected within the continuum of treatment of public\, counter public\, and anti-public. This book argues that affect-instilled arguments used in public deliberation in times of uncertainty\, along with whataboutism constitute a playbook for chaos online. \n[…]

SUMMARY:2022 Midterms: NYU Center for Social Media & Politics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Media Consumption\, Misinformation\, and Polarization \nSocial media has transformed the media and political landscape\, but the vast majority of Americans still get their news from traditional sources such as local TV\, cable TV\, radio\, and newspapers. This seminar will present new research on media consumption and the spread of misinformation in both English and Spanish\, the effects of partisan media on viewers’ beliefs and attitudes\, and the effect of media coverage on perceptions of political polarization. \n[…]\n
