SUMMARY:Fake news and the assault on truth | The Guardian
DESCRIPTION:The John Rylands Research Institute and Library\, part of The University of Manchester\, holds the entire archive of the Manchester Guardian. In this series of events to mark our bicentenary\, our panels of special guests and experts will each discuss an item from the archive\, its relevance to today’s news and media\, and how it may influence our future. \nFor our first event\, we will be taking a closer look at how we navigate misinformation in today’s complex\, internationally-connected media landscape. In 1977 the Guardian created an elaborate April Fool’s Day hoax – a seven page travel supplement about a fictional island called San Serriffe – which fooled the nation. \n[…]

SUMMARY:An OSoMe Tool: Tracking Online (Mis)information | R Street
DESCRIPTION:The rise of social media platforms has introduced another widespread phenomenon—the spread of misleading information. Whether introduced organically or deliberately\, misinformation threatens the integrity of democratic journalism. Because misinformation has become a serious threat to governance\, it requires interdisciplinary efforts and collaboration to mitigate. To this end\, Indiana University’s Observatory on Social Media (OSoMe) researches information diffusion and misinformation in media ecosystems\, and develops accessible\, educational resources to chart trends in real-time. \n[…]\n\n

SUMMARY:Police Violence\, Racial Injustice\, and the Press: Reflections on Coverage of the Chauvin Trial | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:The trial of Derek Chauvin sparked national conversations about violent policing and racial injustice. In its wake\, how should policy makers\, police\, and journalists respond? The New Yorker staff writer Jelani Cobb (Spring 2018 Shorenstein Writer in Residence) and BBC correspondent Tara McKelvey (Fall 2012 Shorenstein Fellow) — who both covered the trial from Minneapolis — will join The Atlantic staff writer Adam Serwer (Spring 2019 Shorenstein Fellow) to discuss how public discourse and press coverage have and have not changed in the fallout of the trial. Institute of Politics executive director Setti Warren will moderate the event. \n[…]\n\n

SUMMARY:How to Save Ourselves From Disinformation\, a Times Event | The New York Times
DESCRIPTION:You’ve seen it. That meme that seems just too good to be true. That outlandish story your family member prefaced with\, “Can you believe he said that?” followed by a video link of unknown origin and vintage. \nWe are in an era of misinformation — and even disinformation\, when someone intentionally disseminates false or misleading information. And while there are some bad actors\, also important are social and psychological forces that lead people to spread and fall for false information in the first place. \nJoin Sarah Silverman\, comedian and host of the Sarah Silverman Podcast\, and Times reporters Kevin Roose\, Sheera Frenkel and Davey Alba as they untangle the roots of disinformation\, and the effects it has on our world. \n[…]

SUMMARY:OxDEG: Exploring the Flat Earth: Beliefs\, Identity\, and Rationality | Oxford Internet Institute
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar Dr. Krafft will report on a mixed methods study of the North American Flat Earther community\, drawing on documents from two Flat Earth Society websites\, three surveys\, and participant observation at the 2018 Flat Earth International Conference. Across the three surveys they find that around 20-30% of respondents are at least to some extent uncertain that the shape of the earth is round. Drawing on interpretive methods\, they conduct an investigation of what meaning flat earth beliefs have to their adherents. The varieties of motivations and meanings identified challenge existing prominent models of belief formation that have recently been employed in the fields of human-computer interaction and media studies. \n[…]

SUMMARY:The Future of Democracy Ep. 41: The role of race in American political views | Knight Foundation
DESCRIPTION:While the last year has seen broad-based calls for racial equity in the United States\, protests often don’t always translate into policy outcomes. On Episode 41 of “The Future of Democracy\,” Knight’s Evette Alexander will take a deep dive into how racial attitudes affect American political preferences with Dr. David C. Wilson\, incoming dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California\, Berkeley. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Racialized Disinformation and Real World Consequences | NetGain
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of heightened online radicalization over the past several years\, including the rise of far-right nationalism\, violence\, and harms to democracy globally\, it is clear that technology platforms are playing an outsized role in amplifying racialized disinformation and fomenting real world consequences. \nAs lawmakers and civil society grapple with the policy and legal interventions available to protect communities and democratic practices\, it is also important to understand the ways in which technology is stoking racialized disinformation. The insurrection at the U.S. Capitol\, the rise of white supremacist hate groups\, the uptick in violence against Asian Americans\, and the pervasiveness of anti-Black racism all underscore the urgency of addressing racialized disinformation in the U.S. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Foresight and Decolonial Humanitarian Tech Ethics | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:Can humanitarian actors play a more intentional role in designing just and equitable digital futures? Could we\, in fact\, design worlds that don’t imagine some figures\, particularly populations that we serve in the global south\, to merely be passive beneficiaries and outside of the borders of expertise we seek? Instead of looking at digital governance in terms of control\, weaving in feminist and decolonial approaches might help liberate our digital futures so that it is a space of safety and of humanity\, and through this design new forms of digital humanism. \nJoin Anasuya Sengupta\, Sabelo Mhlambi\, Andrew Zolli\, and Aarathi Krishnan as they discuss if humanitarian actors can play a more intentional role in designing just and equitable digital futures. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity in 2021 and Beyond: The Aftermath of the SolarWinds Attack | Georgetown University
DESCRIPTION:In December 2020\, it was first reported that SolarWinds\, a major US information technology firm\, experienced a massive cyberattack which affected up to 18\,000 clients\, including numerous US government agencies and Fortune 500 companies whose networks and data were exposed and vulnerable for months. \nDescribed by Microsoft’s president Brad Smith\, one of the affected clients\, as “the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen\,” the US government investigation attributed the cyberattack to Russian intelligence\, with Russia then denying responsibility. As details continue to emerge\, the implications will affect a range of sensitive activities—from software supply chain management to strategies to protect critical infrastructure\, to new approaches in national and global cybersecurity. \n[…]

SUMMARY:“News you don’t believe”: User perspectives on f*ke news and misinformation | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:Users’ perspectives on what f*ke news and misinformation is and isn’t\, who drives it\, and where people say they see it are important for understanding the scale and scope of public concern\, and how this corresponds with research insights and aligns with proposed responses to these problems\, as well as for the credibility and even effect of responses. In this presentation\, Professor Rasmus Kleis Nielsen\, Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism\, will use survey data and focus group material from Reuters Institute research to present an overview of user perspectives on “fake news” and misinformation more broadly\, and identify some commonalities and differences between how\, respectively\, the public\, researchers\, and policymakers talk about these problems. \n[…] \n\n

SUMMARY:Prototyping Feminist AI | Stanford University HAI
DESCRIPTION:How can feminist methodologies and approaches be applied and be transformative when developing AI and ADM systems? How can AI innovation and social systems innovation be catalysed concomitantly to create a positive movement for social change larger than the sum of the data science or social science parts? How can we produce actionable research that will lead to the profound changes needed – from scratch – in the processes to produce AI? Can we prototype better digital futures? Which disciplines should we include? Where are the gaps? And how can we make a strong case to prototype different\, better digital futures\, before embarking on big AI projects in the public sector? SUMMARY:Sociology Lecture Series: Ruha Benjamin\, "Race to the Future? Reimagining the Default Settings of Technology & Society" | The New School
DESCRIPTION:From everyday apps to complex algorithms\, technology has the potential to hide\, speed\, and deepen discrimination\, while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to racist practices of a previous era. In this talk\, Ruha Benjamin explores a range of discriminatory designs that encode inequity — what she terms the “New Jim Code.” \nThis presentation takes us into the world of biased bots\, altruistic algorithms\, and their many entanglements\, and provides conceptual tools to decode tech promises with historical and sociological insight. She will also consider how race itself is a kind of tool designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice and discuss how technology is and can be used toward liberatory ends. In doing so\, Ruha challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold\, but also the ones we manufacture ourselves. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Epistemic Motivations\, Political Identity\, and Misperceptions about COVID and the 2020 Election | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Speaker Series on Misinformation\, co-sponsored by the NULab at Northeastern University. \nDannagal G. Young (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication\, 2007) is a Professor of Communication and Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware where she studies the content\, audience\, and effects of non-traditional political information. She has authored over forty academic articles and book chapters exploring themes related to political entertainment\, media psychology\, public opinion\, and misinformation. She is also a dedicated public scholar\, with appearances on CNN\, MSNBC\, and PBS and having written for The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, and Vox. Her 2019 book “Irony and Outrage“ examines satire and outrage as the logical extensions of the respective psychological profiles of liberals and conservatives (Oxford University Press\, 2020). Dr. Young’s current book project (with JHU Press) explores how identity fuels misinformation and how our socially sorted political media ecosystem reinforces these patterns. Young was awarded the University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014 and is a TED Speaker. \n[…]\nSource: Epistemic Motivations\, Political Identity\, and Misperceptions about COVID and the 2020 Election | Shorenstein Center

DESCRIPTION:A revealing look at how user behavior is powering deep social divisions online–and how we might yet defeat political tribalism on social media \nIn an era of increasing social isolation\, platforms like Facebook and Twitter are among the most important tools we have to understand each other. We use social media as a mirror to decipher our place in society but\, as Chris Bail explains\, it functions more like a prism that distorts our identities\, empowers status-seeking extremists\, and renders moderates all but invisible. Breaking the Social Media Prism challenges common myths about echo chambers\, foreign misinformation campaigns\, and radicalizing algorithms\, revealing that the solution to political tribalism lies deep inside ourselves. \n[…]

SUMMARY:How the Political Communications Profession Helped Divide America | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Using examples of political advertising\, including some of his own work in nearly 30 years of creating such content as a campaign consultant\, Craig Snyder will explore the cumulative effects on the American political system\, and on American society more broadly\, of four standard techniques in modern American political communications: \n\nThe use of half-truths in advocacy\nRelentless negativity\nThe politics of personal destruction\nWhataboutism\n\nWith the opportunity for questions and interaction beyond the formal presentation\, Snyder wants to engage the audience in a dialogue about improving the way Americans communicate about politics. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Socially Mediated Visibility in Socially and Politically Authoritarian Societies | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:Increased visibility is arguably the most significant affordance of social media and a large body of scholarly work has sought to understand how individuals deal with the effects increased visibility in terms of concern for privacy as well as the ability to broadcast to wide audiences. Much of this work explores how pre-social media norms are applied\, for better or worse\, to socially mediated spaces. The presented projects also seek to understand how pre-existing norms are enacted in social media\, especially with regard to visibility\, but in a different context. This project is set in a society — Azerbaijan — in which a norm of interpersonal as well as governmental surveillance has not only existed for a long time\, but “permeates life” and is a part of “the dominant organizing value in society.“ Moreover\, surveillance is part of enforcing societal behavioral codes\, for which non-compliance results in severe punishment. The increased visibility afforded by social media has amplified and economized both interpersonal and government surveillance\, making the risk associated with behavioral code non-compliance and likelihood of punishment much greater. Given the norm of surveillance and these higher stakes\, Azerbaijanis make choices about online behavior that are of theoretical importance to our broader understanding of online behavior. Pearce will present two studies on visibility in an authoritarian environment: 1) through an Impression Management framework\, how honor is performed online\, and 2) how social media complicates the concealment/disclosure of stigmatized political identities.

SUMMARY:Edgelands Institute Launch Event | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:The Edgelands Institute is an interdisciplinary pop-up institute to redraw our social contract in our era of mass-urbanization\, surveillance\, pandemics\, and other emergencies\, currently being incubated at the Berkman Klein Center. \nThe Institute stems from the perception that the rapid deployment of surveillance technologies in cities to provide security services is reshaping how we interact with government\, corporations\, and each other without receiving the attention this transformation deserves. There is an urgent need for an inclusive conversation around how this is affecting our societies. The goal of the institute is to bring together all the concerned parties to find and create common ground. Its mission is to imagine the terms of new social contracts that work for cities and people in the age of pandemics and digital surveillance. \nDuring this launch event\, the institute will introduce its mission\, methodology\, and\, true to its mission\, bring together arts and research for an engaging session. To guide the conversation\, the institute would appreciate it if you could answer a few questions for us on your views about the urban social contract in your city. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Achieving Digital Equity in India\, Pakistan\, and Beyond | New America
DESCRIPTION:Digital inclusion is about having the right access\, skills\, motivation and trust to confidently go online. Today’s network infrastructure is the lifeline on which much of modern life depends. Without it\, the ramifications of Covid-19 would have been far more severe. As the internet becomes a public utility that shapes our social\, political\, and economic lives\, we must take a hard look on what it means to be disconnected\, and raise ambitions to meet people’s need for affordable meaningful connectivity. More than half of the world’s population remains disconnected to the world\, and therefore\, unable to digitally access jobs\, trainings\, and vital marketplace connections. Connecting the rest of the world could potentially add $6.7 trillion to the digital economy. \nJoin us for this Davos Lab dialogue hosted in partnership with Future Tense\, the Global Shapers Bangalore Hub\, and the Open Technology Institute to discuss the ramifications of the digital divide in India\, Pakistan\, the United States\, and beyond. The Davos Lab is the world’s first grassroot and youth-driven COVID-19 recovery plan\, which will be showcased at the World Economic Forum Special Annual Meeting 2021. \n[…]\n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webcast: The Battle of Algorithms | MIT Technology Review
DESCRIPTION:As machine learning applications move into the mainstream\, a new era of cyber-threat is emerging – one that uses offensive AI to supercharge attack campaigns. Offensive AI allows attackers to automate reconnaissance\, craft tailored impersonation attacks\, and even self-propagate to avoid detection. Security teams can prepare for this eventuality by turning to defensive AI to fight back – leveraging autonomous cyber defense that learns on the job to detect and respond to even the most subtle indicators of an attack\, no matter where it appears. \nThis conversation\, cohosted by MIT Technology Review and Darktrace\, explores current and emerging applications of offensive AI\, defensive AI\, and the ongoing battle of algorithms between the two. \n[…]
