SUMMARY:Webinar: The Double-Edged Sword of AI in Peacebuilding | International Panel on the Information Environment
DESCRIPTION:On 22 September\, the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) invites you to the launch of its landmark report\, Artificial Intelligence and Peacebuilding: Opportunities and Challenges. \nAI is increasingly shaping peacebuilding efforts – helping monitor conflict risks\, support humanitarian coordination\, and foster dialogue. Yet\, the same technologies can also fuel repression\, surveillance\, disinformation\, and polarization. This webinar will explore the double-edged nature of AI in fragile contexts and highlight why human rights must be at the core of its design and deployment. \nDrawing on analysis of over 600 global sources\, the report provides the most comprehensive scientific assessment to date of AI’s potential in peacebuilding. It sets out five key recommendations for policymakers\, the private sector\, and civil society to ensure that AI contributes to peace rather than instability. \nThrough keynote insights\, expert discussion\, and audience engagement\, this session will examine: \n\nThe promise and perils of AI in conflict and post-conflict settings\nThe growing role of generative AI in peacebuilding\nThe importance of local knowledge\, data sovereignty\, and smaller language models\nHow to align AI innovation with human rights principles\, from privacy to freedom of expression\nPractical steps for building cross-sector partnerships that safeguards peace\n\nSpeakers include: \n\nProf. Fredrick Ogenga\, Chair of the IPIE’s Scientific Panel on AI and Peacebuilding\nDr. Evelyne Tauchnitz\, Vice Chair\nDr. Lisa Schirch\, Panel Member\nDr. Craig Zelizer\, Consulting Scientist\n\nThis event will be chaired by Prof. Sebastian Valenzuela\, Chief Science Officer at the IPIE. \nRegister to attend here.
