SUMMARY:Section 230: Protections Can Legal Revisions or Novel Technologies Limit Online Misinformation and Abuse: A Workshop (Day 1) | National Academies
DESCRIPTION:This is the first day of a virtual workshop to identify key issues for consideration in the reexamination of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996.  Section 230 provides Internet-based technology companies and social media platforms with immunity from civil liability for hosting user-generated content and in the removal or moderation of user-generated content. While Section 230 has played a significant role in the development of the Internet as a platform for the global exchange of information and ideas\, disinformation and abuse on social media has become an issue of increasing concern. The workshop will explore how law\, policy\, and technology might better enable management of third party content while preserving free speech and democratic norms. \n[…]\n

SUMMARY:Section 230 Protections: Can Legal Revisions or Novel Technologies Limit Online Misinformation and Abuse A Workshop | National Academies
DESCRIPTION:A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine will convene a workshop to discuss whether protections provided to Internet-based technology companies and social media platforms under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996 should be reconsidered in light of increasing online misinformation and abuse. The workshop will examine the legal and economic rationale for Section 230; review court decisions relevant to Section 230; discuss proposals for revisions to Section 230\, and explore technological approaches that might allow for a more responsible management of third party Internet content. A proceedings in brief will be issued following the workshop. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Reimagine the Internet | Knight First Amendment Institute
DESCRIPTION:Reimagine the Internet is a virtual conference co-hosted by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and the soon-to-be-launched Institute for Digital Public Infrastructure at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. In six sessions over five days\, there will be more than a dozen speakers whose work hints at what the internet could become over the next decade. \nAs the internet has become an inescapable part of our commercial\, social\, and civic lives\, the flaws and harms of the contemporary internet have become increasingly apparent. Despite rhetoric of decentralization\, monopolies and points of control have arisen online\, and powerful corporations have largely unregulated power over vast swaths of speech and commerce. The spaces these corporations have built may be having significant negative effects on our democracies\, leading towards political polarization\, the spread of mis/disinformation\, and the growth of politically influential conspiracy theories. \nSource: Reimagine the Internet: A virtual conference exploring what the internet could become over the next decade | Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University

SUMMARY:2021 Tech and Racial Equity Conference: Anti-Racist Technologies for a Just Future | Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity

SUMMARY:Deepfakes\, Disinformation\, and Democracy | ITIF
DESCRIPTION:The media has long played an important role in a healthy democracy\, providing citizens with access to accurate news and information that allows them to effectively participate in democratic processes. However\, the growing threat from deepfakes and disinformation\, from both foreign and domestic sources\, threatens to overwhelm the ability of individuals to discern fact from fiction\, create new divides in society\, and allow conspiracies\, lies\, and hoaxes to fester online. \nThe public and private sectors have already launched multiple initiatives to address this problem\, including expanding R&D to identify fake content and developing standards to improve attribution for authentic content. In this half-day virtual policy conference\, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF)\, in collaboration with the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) U.S. Technology Policy Committee (USTPC) and the Online News Association (ONA)\, will bring together key stakeholders\, experts\, and thought leaders to discuss the future of deepfakes\, disinformation\, and democracy. \n[…]\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Annual IDeaS Conference: Disinformation\, Hate Speech\, and Extremism Online | Center for Informed Democracy & Social - cybersecurity
DESCRIPTION:Natural disasters\, elections\, climate changes\, insurrections\, pandemics\, and new technologies are rocking the world. People talk about events\, both these massive ones and much smaller ones\, on line. Social media platforms\, search engines and websites have become the window through which these events are viewed and interpreted.  Those on social media seek and shape information\, build and join communities\, often with impacts in the physical world. One consequence is an online breeding ground for growing and disseminating disinformation\, hate speech and extremism.  In this conference we ask: How is this done?  Who is doing it? Why is it being done? What are the social consequences? How can it be countered? \n[…]

SUMMARY:Webinar: How the Indigenous Investigative Collective use public records to show dire gaps in COVID-19 data access | MuckRock
DESCRIPTION:In May of 2020\, the Navajo Nation reported one of the highest per-capita COVID-19 infection rates in the United States. But even the dire official numbers didn’t tell the full story. The Native American Journalists Association’s Indigenous Investigative Collective brought together three newsrooms to launch a public records campaign to dig into how a mix of varying access rules and bureaucratic intransigence have made it impossible to get a complete picture of the pandemic\, hampering efforts at accountability and relief. \nCome hear the story behind the reporting as members of the cross-newsroom Indigenous Investigative Collective share how they used public records to dig into the poor data keeping that hid the impact of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation. The IIC\, a project of the Native American Journalists Association\, brought together High Country News\, Indian Country Today\, and Searchlight New Mexico on the investigation in partnership with MuckRock and with the support of JSK-Big Local News. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Beyond Misinformation: Towards a Research Agenda for Information Ecosystems\, Network Dynamics and Emergent Epistemologies | C4 lab
DESCRIPTION:This workshop starts from the premise that the problem of online misinformation is a symptom\, not a cause. While undeniably problematic\, misinformation is the current cause célèbre of a larger class of pathological dynamics that have emerged in our evolving digital media ecosystems and cause harm at different systemic levels. These dynamics are exacerbated by many aspects of our evolving digital infrastructure\, including the affordances of different media platforms\, algorithmic filters\, the loss of trusted gatekeepers\, the attention economy\, and ever evolving modes of journalism. Additionally\, cognitive factors as well as offline social structures\, including systems of oppression\, play an enormous role in shaping the consensual realities that emerge in digital spaces. \nThis is a wicked problem\, and while many dimensions of the problem have been examined\, a more complete articulation requires the synthesis of insights from scholars across many disciplines. Our hope is that this workshop will provide a vehicle for this process and pave the way to a research agenda that leads to solutions. \n[…]
