SUMMARY:Brennan Center for Justice: Policing Race & Technology
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“Please join the Brennan Center for Justice and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for a full-day symposium on December 3\, 2019\, with a keynote address by Dr. Ruha Benjamin – Associate Professor of African American Studies\, Princeton University. \nThis convening aims to center the racial justice issues raised by modern surveillance technologies such as facial recognition\, predictive policing\, and social media monitoring tools. Through panels and discussion\, this symposium will explore topics such as: \n\nThe deployment of surveillance technologies in the face of well-documented error rates when analyzing communities of color\, and the ways in which their unchecked use threatens to obscure and automate racial inequalities under the guise of unbiased computer systems;\n\n\nThe need to analyze the use of surveillance tools in the context of well-established racial biases in policing\, which has knock-on effects on the criminal justice system;\n\n\nIssues raised by using surveillance technologies in tandem\, such as their exacerbated impact on communities of color and the creation of a pervasive dragnet that is incompatible with a democratic society; and\n\n\nThe different approaches to regulation\, including outright bans (enacted for facial recognition in cities such as San Francisco and Somerville\, MA)\, efforts to pass transparency measures (enacted in cities such as Seattle and Nashville\, TN)\, and the role of inspector general audits (influential reports in Los Angeles and Chicago).”\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Conspiracies Conference: U of Miami
DESCRIPTION:“This conference intendeds to bring together scholars studying conspiracy theories\, fake news\, and misinformation from across disciplinary and geographic boundaries. \nThe goals of the conference are (1) to gain a comparative perspective in the study of conspiracy theories\, fake news\, and misinformation by bringing together researchers from across continents and from across disciplinary boundaries\, and (2) to formulate solutions to the current problems of conspiracy theories\, fake news\, and misinformation. \nConspiracy theories are not confined to parlor games about who really shot Kennedy or who probed whom near Roswell\, New Mexico. Conspiracy theorizing (or what Richard Hofstadter famously called the paranoid style) is an enduring part of politics. While often caricatured as a fringe demographic composed of middle-aged white male Internet enthusiasts\, polls tell us a different story. Conspiracy theories permeate all parts of society and cut across gender\, age\, race\, income\, political affiliation\, educational level and occupational status. Conspiracy theories are ubiquitous\, absorbing\, and substantial; they reveal the darkest recesses of a nation’s psyche. They have also been given new life due to the prevalence of fake news\, state sponsored disinformation campaigns\, and elite-driven misinformation. \nThere are persuasive reasons to study conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories have ushered in revolutions\, undercut the ability of governments to lead\, perverted democracy\, and provoked witch-hunts. Current evidence suggests that conspiracy thinking can decrease participation and voter turnout\, but also add fire to political polarization and populist movements. \nThere is a debate to be had regarding the benefits or harms of conspiracy theories. On one hand\, their negative consequences are varied and many. Imagine a world without conspiracy theories targeting religious and ethnic minorities or immigrants. Or\, a world where conspiracy theories do not take priority over scientific and medical consensuses. Whether the issue is climate change\, vaccination rates\, violence\, fake news\, or international cooperation\, solving many of the world’s major challenges involve addressing conspiracy theories. On the other hand\, conspiracies actually do happen\, powerful people do abuse their power from time to time\, and some level of public skepticism is a necessary part of a healthy democracy. \nFor such a common feature of the political landscape\, there is little consensus on why conspiratorial beliefs blossom\, or how to stop them in the age of social media. This is not for want of attention; authors from many disciplines – particularly in the last ten years – have addressed the phenomenon. But despite the broad and growing interest\, scholars have yet to adequately integrate findings from disparate disciplines into coherent theoretical frameworks\, or to propose meaningful policy solutions. The problem lies in a lack of comparative cross-cultural research and a dearth of interdisciplinary work. \nThis conference intends to bridge the gap between the great works currently being undertaken across disciplines. It also seeks to bring together researchers studying conspiracy theorizing across the globe. We intend to build broad interdisciplinary networks\, share disparate findings\, and move the study forward.”

SUMMARY:The Power of Narrative: Telling True Stories in Turbulent Times.
DESCRIPTION:“The Power of Narrative Conference has convened in several places under several names since its founding at Boston University in 1998. Our mission remains constant as storytelling journalism goes digital: helping narrative journalists to strengthen their craft skills\, puzzle out the complex ethics of intimate journalism\, and impart the down-to-earth humanity that is the genre’s strength. Every year\, we quickly sell all our seats. The conference talks are stimulating\, sophisticated\, practical and relevant\, aimed at mid-career nonfiction storytellers in many media\, offered by terrific and varied practitioners. The vigorous Q & A sessions following each talk keep us on-target. And\, between sessions and at meal breaks we program in time to meet speakers and new colleagues and share ideas\, aspirations\, projects\, networks. In these turbulent times\, our candid\, informed\, independent journalism is crucial.”

SUMMARY:Information Ethics Roundtable 2020 "Scientific Misinformation in the Digital Era"
DESCRIPTION:“The Information Ethics Roundtable is a yearly conference that brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines\, including but not limited to\, philosophy\, computer and information science\, political science\, library science\, journalism\, and law to discuss ethical issues such as information privacy\, intellectual property\, access to information\, artificial intelligence\, and big data. \nScientific hoaxes (Feder 2017) and “quack” medicine (Kang and Pedersen 2017) are nothing new. But some are concerned that\, with the rise of the internet\, science is more seriously under threat from misinformation than ever before. In recent issues of the Journal of the American Heart Association and the Royal Society Open Science\, scientists are sounding the alarm\, arguing that our current digital environment is promoting the “wanton spread of medical misinformation” that is causing “significant harm” (Hill et al. 2019) and “undermining trust in science and the capacity of individuals and society to make evidence-informed choices\, including on life-or-death issues” (Hopf et al. 2019). The 2020 Information Ethics Roundtable invites submissions that offer analyses\, explanations\, and/or solutions to the problem of scientific misinformation and disinformation in the digital era. We seek submissions that approach these issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives\, with a potential to inform discussions of information ethics.”

SUMMARY:ICWSM 2020
DESCRIPTION:“The International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) is a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to come together to share knowledge\, discuss ideas\, exchange information\, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This overall theme includes research in new perspectives in social theories\, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media. ICWSM is a singularly fitting venue for research that blends social science and computational approaches to answer important and challenging questions about human social behavior through social media while advancing computational tools for vast and unstructured data. \nICWSM\, now in its fourteenth year\, has become one of the premier venues for computational social science\, and previous years of ICWSM have featured papers\, posters\, and demos that draw upon network science\, machine learning\, computational linguistics\, sociology\, communication\, and political science. The uniqueness of the venue and the quality of submissions have contributed to a fast growth of the conference\, and a competitive acceptance rate around 20% for full-length research papers published in the proceedings by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). \nFor ICWSM-2020\, in addition to the usual program of contributed talks\, posters and demos\, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks from prominent scientists and technologists. Building on successes in previous years\, ICWSM-2020 will also hold a day of workshops and tutorials in addition to the main conference.”

SUMMARY:Allied Media Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Allied Media Conference emerges out of 20 years of relationship-building across issues\, identities\, organizing practices and creative mediums. \nSince the first conference (then the Midwest Zine Conference) in 1999\, people have been compelled by the concept of do-it-yourself media. The zine conference was rebranded as the “Underground Publishing Conference” for a couple years and then became the Allied Media Conference in 2002. The shift to Allied Media attracted more people who were interested in using participatory media as a strategy for social justice organizing. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Ethics of Big Data Symposium: Race\, Representation & Justice | Marquette University
DESCRIPTION:As we look at the events of 2020\, we cannot ignore how issues of race\, representation\, and justice intersect with the growing reliance on data\, algorithims\, and computational approaches in nearly all aspects of our lives. Big data increasingly impacts how information flows across networks\, how law enforcement and the criminal justice system operate in our communities\, how individuals and communities are made visible (or invisible)\, how public & social services are dispersed\, and\, most fundamentally\, how justice might be possible in our society. \nThe 5th Annual Marquette “Ethics of Big Data Symposium” explores how data intersects with critical issues race\, representation\, and justice in and across our communities. Please join us for this important discussion.

SUMMARY:Data and Democracy Symposium | Knight First Amendment Institute
DESCRIPTION:Today\, governments and private actors can collect\, store\, and continuously update vast troves of data. Yet we have barely begun to understand the impact on our democracy of large-scale data collection and the use of such data sets to make decisions that can dramatically impact individual lives and entire communities. \nThe Data and Democracy Symposium will investigate what our changing capacities to capture\, analyze\, and manipulate data mean for self-government\, and ask how the law must adapt to ensure the conditions for a robust democracy. Organized by the Institute’s Senior Visiting Research Scholar\, Yale Law Professor Amy Kapczynski\, and co-sponsored by the Law and Political Economy Project at Yale Law School\, the symposium will focus on three areas that are both central to democratic governance and directly affected by advancing technologies and ever-increasing data collection: 1) public opinion formation and access to information; 2) the formation and exercise of public power; and 3) the political economy of data. \n[…] \n\n\n\n\n end article metadata \n\n end article social end article body

SUMMARY:American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:[if lt IE 9]> \n\n“We are thrilled to announce the theme of the 2020 AAA Annual Meeting to be held in St. Louis\, MO: Truth and Responsibility. \n“Truth and Responsibility” is a call to reimagine anthropology to meet the demands of the present moment. The imperative to bear witness\, take action\, and be held accountable to the truths we write and circulate invites us to reflect on our responsibility in reckoning with disciplinary histories\, harms\, and possibilities. To whom are we giving evidence and toward what ends? For whom are we writing? To whom are we accountable\, and in what ways? \nMany consider anthropology to be a holistic social science dedicated to cross-cultural understanding as a way to reduce bigotry and more fully comprehend “what it means to be human.” Others push against this readily circulated origin story\, arguing that “human” remains a highly contested\, political category—evident as the presumed set of rights and protections associated with the “human” continue to be stripped away violently in the communities in which some of us live and work. Which violent histories and epistemologies must anthropologists take responsibility for in telling truth(s) about the discipline’s development? How do the dual histories of settler colonialism and slavery continue to influence anthropological thought and practices? In these political times\, how can anthropologists throughout the globe work to secure a capacious\, progressive vision of the human? How might movements for anti-racism\, decoloniality\, queer liberation\, and healing such as #BlackLivesMatter\, #ProtectMaunaKea\, and #MeToo push a future anthropology out of the ashes of the anthropological past? Finally\, what are the limits and possibilities of the anthropological imagination? \nAcross subfields\, we find truths in patterns of human behavior\, language\, evolution\, and cultural worlds. Industry-positioned anthropologists do this by extending the boundaries of the discipline not as an administrative solution to job shortages but as a source of intervention and knowledge production. Increasingly\, anthropologists who make use of the scientific method question how status and identity help to decide which facts come to represent truth. How might quantitative researchers use our methods to identify patterned truths\, and what responsibility do we hold in challenging conventional wisdom about these patterns? What responsibility do we have to both our colleagues and larger publics\, to push toward increased transparency and ethical grounding in our data collection\, analysis\, and presentation? \nLocated in the vicinity of one of the largest and most influential ancient Indigenous societies in North America and miles from the #FergusonUprising\, St. Louis is a useful site for anthropologists to reckon with anthropological practices and their impact. What is the responsibility of contemporary anthropology to repair relationships with communities who have historically been the target of our discipline? As practitioners\, students\, and professors increasingly resemble these communities\, how can we create new pedagogical\, archeological\, ethnographic\, and mentoring practices? What barriers—in anthropology generally and the American Anthropological Association (AAA) specifically—exclude those whose truths are uncomfortable or inconvenient? What might our discipline and organizations look like if we were to honestly confront barriers that exclude marginalized and contingent scholars? \nPedagogy is a key medium for the communication of anthropological truths. Which (and whose) truths are foregrounded in our curricula? What are the possibilities for a liberatory pedagogy in a precarious\, “post-truth” era? Conferences\, museums\, organizing spaces\, and classrooms are sites where pedagogy and various forms of communication can help us interrogate the performativity of truth. How might anthropologists conceive of truth performances? Might visual\, aural\, and choreographic performances during AAA sessions offer anthropologists alternative genres for truth-telling and truth-making that provoke discussions about responsibility? \nIn accordance with the urgency of the year’s theme\, the questions posed in this call for papers do not have easy answers. The hope is that those who submit proposals will take up these questions and engage in collective thinking and imagining about the truths we hold\, the truths we challenge\, and the responsibilities we bear in co-creating a free and more equitable world. All panel proposals should have a statement about how the panel has incorporated the goals of equity\, diversity\, and inclusion\, and/or an analysis of power.”

SUMMARY:IDeaS Institute and Conference | Center for Informed Democracy & Social - cybersecurity (IDeaS) - Carnegie Mellon University
DESCRIPTION:2020 has been a year marked by worldwide crises and changes\, including a global pandemic\, efforts to increase social justice\, nation-shaping elections\, massive wildfires and other environmental events\, to name just a few. These crises and changes—in particular\, their social dimensions—have been directly impacted and shaped by disinformation\, influence campaigns\, and other efforts to undermine people’s understanding and autonomy. \nWe will hold a special virtual conference on Social-cybersecurity in Times of Crisis and Change this November 2020. This conference aims to advance the science of social-cybersecurity through research and applications that address two questions. How does the unprecedented scale of false information and its spread impact human activity in times of crisis and social change? And\, what are the mechanisms that enable or contain the spread of false information during these times? \nThe institute and conference charge no registration fee but registration is required.
