SUMMARY:AI in Healthcare: Mitigating Disparities\, Biases & Misinformation | Hariri Institute
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) and social media are finding useful applications in health care\, yet\, their use may perpetuate or even accentuate inequities\, disparities\, and the critical role of social determinants of health\, or even facilitate the spread of health-related misinformation. DESCRIPTION:What are the financial\, social\, and human costs of misinformation? What is the price that businesses\, hospitals\, civil society groups\, and schools pay for false or misleading information online? How can researchers support public officials and especially the communities targeted by disinformation campaigns when costing out “fake news funds” and building capacity for digital resilience? SUMMARY:The Social Media Summit | MIT
DESCRIPTION:The Social Media Summit @ MIT (SMS @ MIT) brings together the world’s leaders in social technology to examine one of the most critical and compelling issues of our time – the impact of social media on our democracies\, our economies\, and our public health — with a vision to craft meaningful solutions to the social media crisis. \nSocial media has become a dominant force for information flow in modern life – it is now a major channel for social interaction\, political communication\, and commercial marketing. This rise of social media has fundamentally changed the world’s information landscape from a comparatively small number of information producers (e.g. news networks) to large numbers of producers\, distributors\, and receivers. This democratization of content production and distribution has had a profound impact on how people understand the world. Not only has the volume of information increased\, but with the removal of gatekeepers on distribution\, the diversity (and thus variation in quality) of the available information has also increased. This has both positive and negative impacts on individuals and society. The purpose of this event is to understand the impact of social media\, revisit public policy frameworks that will best govern this impact\, and craft an agenda going forward about how to achieve the promise of social media and avoid it’s peril. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy | University of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:With democracies across the globe under assault\,The University of Chicago’s nonpartisan Institute of Politics and The Atlantic are hosting Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy\, a groundbreaking three-day event exploring the organized spread of disinformation and strategies to respond to it. \nThe conference\, April 6 to 8\, will explore the roots and scope of the problem\, the next-generation threats posed by new technological advances\, and the tools and policies required to neutralize them. Panels will also discuss the challenge presented when the term disinformation itself becomes fractious\, and the tension between free expression and the need to combat wanton and willful disinformation aimed at eroding it. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Lies\, Free Speech\, and the Law | Knight First Amendment Institute
DESCRIPTION:On April 8\, 2022\, the Knight Institute will host a symposium to explore how the law regulates or should regulate false and misleading speech. The symposium\, titled “Lies\, Free Speech\, and the Law\,” is being overseen by the Institute’s Senior Visiting Research Scholar Genevieve Lakier and will take place at Columbia University. \nThe symposium will focus on five themes that examine the connections between lies\, freedom of speech (construed broadly)\, and the law. These are: 1) the sociological and constitutional status of false or misleading speech; 2) defining the category of lies; 3) structural regulation and the problem of lies; 4) government lies; and 5) the deregulation of disclosure. \nDue to university restrictions\, only Columbia University students\, faculty\, and staff will be allowed to attend in person. We encourage everyone else to please join us online. All panels will be livestreamed. Please RSVP to receive links and updates about the program. \n[…]\n\n

SUMMARY:The Future of Social Media: Covering\, Researching\, and Regulating Platforms | NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Social media platforms generate mountains of data — about what we like\, what news we read\, and who we talk to. This information\, for the most part\, is only available to the companies themselves\, meaning journalists\, researchers\, policymakers\, and the public lack a clear understanding of how social media impacts our society. The Facebook Papers changed that. The internal research not only revealed the potential harms caused by its platforms\, but that Facebook knew about those harms and did little to stop them. Now\, with an explosion of attention around this issue\, we must ask — what’s next?\n\nThis half-day virtual symposium brings together a range of journalists\, researchers\, and legal experts to explore that question and examine how to cover\, research\, and regulate social media platforms in the wake of the Facebook Papers. Join us for one panel or the entire event.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by: NYU’s Center for Social Media & Politics\, Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy at NYU School of Law\, CUNY Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism\, NYU Arts & Science\, and NYU Brademas Center.\n\n[…]

SUMMARY:Conferences | SUNY Council on Writing
DESCRIPTION:Call for Proposals\, 2023\n“Writing\, Thinking\, and Learning with AI:\nExploring Relationships of Rhetoric and Artificial Intelligence” \nJoin us October 13–14\, 2023\, for a virtual conference hosted by the SUNY Council on Writing and the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University \nThe recent attention given to the topic of artificial intelligence has been largely attributed to the introduction of ChatGPT\, the conversational (and controversial) chatbot released by OpenAI. ChatGPT\, itself an assemblage of many technologies like large language models\, neural networks\, and natural language processing that we colloquially simplify to “AI\,” represents only a portion of the larger landscape of machine learning and artificial intelligence development that has taken place over decades. But the sudden explosion of public access to sophisticated generative AI programs like ChatGPT has pushed into the mainstream the idea that machines can “write” (perhaps even in ways some readers see as cogent and well-reasoned) in response to open-ended questions. What does it mean to practice rhetoric in this age of artificial intelligence? What does it mean\, more broadly\, to write\, think\, and learn? How does this new development in “writing technology” reshape our understanding and practice as human rhetors? What are the areas of concern and/or potential\, and how do we address them in different disciplines and contexts? What rhetorical relationships of AI and writing\, thinking\, and learning might we wish to amplify or attenuate? \n[…]

SUMMARY:AI for Humanity and Society 2023 | WASP-HS
DESCRIPTION:As we face an increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday practices\, it becomes more critical than ever to examine how AI affects our lives and society. Researchers in the social sciences and humanities have made essential observations and analyses on this topic. Yet\, we still need grounded\, situated\, and relational understandings of how AI impacts us individually and collectively. \nTo reach this goal\, it is imperative to closely examine the norms\, values\, and assumptions underpinning current AI research\, inquiry about the criticality embedded in scholarly practices\, and question the relevance of the methods chosen.  We must identify what works well for all groups in society and discuss what needs improvement or change. \nThis is why WASP-HS welcomes researchers\, representatives from industry\, and policymakers to discuss these issues on 14-15 November at Malmö Live in Malmö\, Sweden. \nWe look forward to your thoughts and ideas on how to address these challenges so we can work together to contribute to a future we all want to live in. \nWelcome to the WASP-HS conference AI for Humanity and Society 2023! \n\n[…]
