SUMMARY:Democracy and Digital Media
DESCRIPTION:“In 1998\, MIT’s Comparative Media Studies program held the first Media in Transition (MiT) conference and inaugurated a related book series. Research from that first MiT conference appeared in Democracy and New Media\, Jenkins & Thorburn\, eds.\, (MIT Press\, 2003). Now\, twenty years later\, we are organizing the 10th iteration of the event. Much has changed over these two decades\, but the theme “democracy and digital media” is as urgent as ever. Twenty years ago there was no Facebook\, Twitter\, or Netflix. iPhones and Samsung Galaxies had not yet hit the shelves. And Siri and Alexa were still in development. Since 1998\, media have undergone major transition. We have witnessed a shift from Napster to Spotify\, from Web 1.0 to 2.0\, from CU-SeeMe to Twitch TV\, and beyond. We have experienced the rise of social media\, civic media\, algorithmic cultures\, and have seen ever greater concentration of media ownership. The events of 9/11 catalyzed intensified state surveillance and privatized security using various media technologies. Undergirding these shifts have been major transformations in global media infrastructure\, the platformization of the Internet\, and the ubiquity of the mobile phone. \nIn the US\, we also have seen changes in the news ecosystem with the likes of ProPublica and community engagement journalism. At the same time\, public trust in media has dropped from 55% in 1998 to 32% in 2016\, according to a Pew report. For better and worse\, a growth of interest in media ritual and a decline in the more familiar transmission paradigm is underway. Given such changes\, concepts of participation\, trust\, and democracy are increasingly fraught and have been powerfully repositioned. How will our news media look and sound in the next decade? What can we learn from news media of the past? What can international perspectives reveal about the variability and plasticity of media landscapes? How are non-traditional sources of learning\, knowledge production\, and participation reshaping civic spheres? We are interested in how these issues play out across media\, whether as represented in television series and films\, or enacted in rule set and player interactions in games\, or enabled in community media\, music\, social media\, and talk radio. We welcome research that considers these issues in public media and commercial media\, with individual users and collective stakeholders\, across media infrastructures and media texts\, and embedded in various historical eras or cultural settings.”

SUMMARY:Ecsite 2019 Pre-Conference Workshop: Beyond Fact Checking\, Addressing Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:“This two-day pre-conference workshop will bring together social science researchers and the science engagement community to explore the role of science communication professionals at a moment when many worry about the prevalence of misinformation. Recent emphasis on values to the exclusion of facts challenges democratic dialogue and can impact global science and technology progress. Public understanding of climate change\, public health issues like vaccination\, and technologies like GMOs is complicated by the spread of misinformation. Unquestionably\, science communication practitioners have a role to play\, but what is that role and how much can we expect to influence the system? \nThe workshop will provide a space for researchers with a deep understanding of misinformation\, trust in science and scientists and other relevant research fields to work together with science engagement professionals and develop practical ways forward”

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Conference on Politics and Computational Social Science (PaCSS)
DESCRIPTION:“The data and methodologies available to social scientists have exploded with the emergence of vast archives of passive data collection\, large scale online experimentation\, and innovative uses of simulation.  These data are of a larger magnitude and methods are of a greater computational complexity than approaches that have dominated political science for the last 50 years. \nThis offers the potential for rich insights into society at scale\, while simultaneously introducing new ethical and infrastructural challenges. In parallel\, the information and communication technologies that have driven these changes are also driving changes in politics\, around the world\, that require study. \nIn order to understand the political world\, it is increasingly important to gain access to the political communication and behavior occurring online. This preconference gathering will offer a forum for political science research in this emerging space. Example relevant topics/approaches include:  analysis of social media; text analysis; use of finely granular geographic data; large scale online experimentation. \nScholars from all subfields of political science are welcome\, as are researchers in other relevant disciplines\, such as computer science\, sociology\, and physics. The meeting will take place 9am-5pm on Wednesday\, August 28th at Georgetown University. \nEveryone who wishes to attend should apply. We welcome applications to present\, discuss or simply participate. We recognize that strength comes through diversity\, and actively seek\, welcome\, and encourage people with diverse backgrounds\, experiences\, and identities to apply and attend. \nThis will be a one day conference with a keynote by Sandra González-Bailón of the University of Pennsylvania. A wide range of subjects for presentations are welcome\, including purely methodologically oriented presentations or applications thereof; synthesis/overviews of research; discussions of ethics and/or data infrastructures; and so on. Papers are not required. \nApplications to present should be submitted by June 3 at our proposal submission page. \nRegister for the conference at our registration page.  Registration is $50 before August 1\, 2019 and $100 after that.  The conference includes breakfast\, lunch\, coffee and snacks. \nPew Research Center is pleased to host two parallel training workshops at their office in downtown D.C. These workshops will focus on two key areas: 1) natural language (NLP) processing techniques and their application to social science questions; and 2) deep learning techniques with applications to image analysis for social scientists. Participants will be given hands-on experience building and training models in these subject areas and will also be able to meet members of Pew Research Center’s Data Labs team. Workshops will run from 2pm to 5pm Tuesday August 27. Light snacks and coffee will be provided. Cost per participant is $25. \nPACSS 2019 is sponsored by the McCourt School of Public Policy Data Science for Public Policy Program\, the Office of Provost Robert Groves\, Georgetown University and Sage Publishing and the Pew Research Center.”

SUMMARY:Political Communication APSA Pre-Conference 2019: Media and Democracy in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:“Political Communication as a discipline has long been concerned with the interactions between media\, citizens\, and government. In 2019\, both the media and democracy have fallen on hard times. We are facing hard questions about whether free speech can survive the rising tide of disinformation\, whether a free press can sustain itself financially\, and whether liberal democracy can coexist with digital populism. \nFor the 2019 Political Communication APSA Preconference\, we invited paper submissions that deal with topics related to media and democracy in troubled times. How are citizens\, journalists\, media outlets\, digital platforms\, and public officials adapting to these troubled times? What is the nature of the threat that we face\, and what (if anything) can be done?”

SUMMARY:Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FiFAfrica)
DESCRIPTION:“On September 23-26\, 2019 the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) will host the sixth Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica). This landmark event convenes a spectrum of stakeholders from across the internet governance and online rights arenas in Africa and beyond to deliberate on gaps\, concerns and opportunities for advancing privacy\, free expression\, non-discrimination and the free flow of information online. \nThis year\, FIFAfrica will take place in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia\, where since April 2018 the new Ethiopian government has undertaken unprecedented political and economic reforms. These have included release from jail of thousands of prisoners\, announcing plans to liberalise the telecom\, aviation\, and transportation sectors\, and dropping charges against many opposition leaders\, bloggers\, and activists. On the internet freedom front\, the new administration has restored mobile and broadband internet services that had been disrupted since 2016\, and unblocked 246 websites\, blogs\, and news sites that had been inaccessible for over a decade. These pivotal developments serve as an avenue to advance more progressive efforts on internet governance and promotion of human rights online\, not only in the country that hosts the African Union (AU) but on the continent at large. \nHosting FIFAfrica in Addis Ababa is also in keeping the stride of expanding the conversation\, as well as knowledge and skills development to different parts of the continent. In its inaugural years\, the Forum took place in Kampala\, Uganda. Since then\, FIFAfrica’s expanding footprint has seen it being hosted in Johannesburg\, South Africa in partnership with the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) in 2017 and in Accra\, Ghana in partnership with the Media Foundation West Africa (MFWA) in 2018. \nThe Forum responds to rising challenges to the enjoyment of internet freedom in various countries\, including arrests and intimidation of online users\, internet disruptions\, and a proliferation of laws and regulations that undermine the potential of digital technology to drive socio-economic and political development on the continent. FIFAfrica therefore puts internet freedom on the agenda of key actors including African policy makers\, regulators\, human rights defenders\, law enforcement representatives\, and the media\, paving the way for broader work on advancing online rights in Africa and promoting the multi-stakeholder model of internet governance.”

SUMMARY:Association of Internet Researchers Conference 2019 (#AoIR2019)
DESCRIPTION:“The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to announce Queensland University of Technology\, Brisbane\, Australia as the site of #AoIR2019. For only the second time in its history\, the AoIR conference will cross the equator and be held in the southern hemisphere\, returning to Brisbane and QUT where it was hosted in 2006. The conference takes place on 2-5 October 2019. \nTrust is one of the most critical issues of our time: trust in our fellow Internet users; trust in the information we encounter in our online environments; trust in the data we produce and in the data that are continuously produced about us; trust in the algorithms that process and evaluate these data; trust in those who create the digital content we consume; trust in platforms and intermediaries that maintain our online spaces and that manage and trade in these data; trust in our national and regional governments that engage citizens over the Internet; trust in grassroots\, social welfare and non-government organisations; trust in the regulatory bodies and political systems that are in charge of governing these systems of exchange. At every level\, and spurred on by a rise in extremism and increased suspicion of others\, our trust in the system is being challenged\, presenting challenges for existing institutions and the opportunity to imagine new ones. The 2019 conference of the Association of Internet Researchers addresses these questions of trust. The full Call for Proposals is here.“

SUMMARY:Disinformation and Elections in East and South East Asia: Digital Futures and Fragile Democracies
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“A recent series of elections in Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Thailand\, the Philippines and indeed across Asia has highlighted the salience of digital media in political campaigns and insidious modes of electoral manipulation. This two-day workshop aims to gather evidence into the operations and impact of digital disinformation in the context of recent Asian elections. \nThe conference approaches Asia as a site in which disinformation in various digital and analog forms have not only deep local histories but also radical acceleration and innovation the likes of which have little to no precedent in advanced liberal democracies in the West. Many Asian countries lead in both scale and intensity of technological adoption and use while serving as “laboratories” for testing and experimentation by Big Tech firms\, with minimal oversight and accountability to the potentially grave consequences of algorithmic tweaks\, the dispersed labor of content moderation\, and new platform rollouts. Thus we seek to develop a framework that examines the social and political ramifications of this process beyond the region. \nThe two-day event aims for interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to thinking through issues of disinformation that draw from areas of sociology\, politics\, media and communication studies\, journalism studies\, critical legal studies\, information science\, and anthropology.” \n\n\n\n Event Listing Body \n\n Listing Hero Details \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Using Tech For Good: A New Generation of Civic-Minded Technologists
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“Understanding technology and its implications is essential to creating a more just and equitable future. How do we ensure the public is better served by the design and implementation of policies and services which anticipate the implications of technology? How can we include the next generation of computer scientists\, information architects\, engineers\, data scientists\, and designers in policymaking and public service? \nThe Public Interest Technology University Network\, a partnership that unites 21 colleges and universities\, is working to address these very issues by building the nascent field of public interest technology and growing a new generation of civic-minded technologists. \nJoin us for the first annual convening of the Public Interest Tech University Network to find out more on how the network of partners from higher education\, philanthropy\, and public policy is building the public interest technology sector; hear from leaders and cultural luminaries on addressing the systemic inequality; and discover how you can use a career as a technologist for good.” \n\n\n\n Event Listing Body \n\n Listing Hero Details \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Color of Surveillance: Monitoring of Poor and Working People
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“The powerful have long agreed: Poor and working people must be watched. \nWith the proliferation of digital monitoring and algorithmic management of gig economy and blue collar workers\, it might seem like the expansion of workplace surveillance is a new trend. In reality\, it is a centuries-old phenomenon that has shaped core aspects of modern privacy debates. From English Poor Laws\, to the monitoring of 19th century coal miners and 20th century farmworker advocates\, to contemporary efforts to track workers in the digital economy\, this conference will follow the surveillance of poor and working people and those who advocate for them. \nHow has the myth of the untrustworthy pauper or worker transformed over time? What role has race and ethnicity played in justifying surveillance? Has this surveillance proven effective or not? How has technology normalized and propogated this surveillance? Finally\, how are local communities\, advocates\, and artists responding to these challenges? \nThe Color of Surveillance addresses these questions and more\, elevating the voices of working people\, labor advocates\, artists\, and historians. The conference will take place on Thursday\, November 7 in Hart Auditorium at Georgetown University Law Center\, and is presented in partnership with Free Press and MediaJustice\, with support from The Center on Poverty and Inequality Economic Security and Opportunity Initative\, the Workers’ Rights Institute\, and The Institute for Technology Law and Policy. \nStay tuned for more information on speakers and session details (note: if you would like to RSVP without going through Eventbrite\, please email us at privacy@georgetown.edu). SUMMARY:Brennan Center for Justice: Policing Race & Technology
DESCRIPTION:Event Listing Header \n\n\n“Please join the Brennan Center for Justice and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for a full-day symposium on December 3\, 2019\, with a keynote address by Dr. Ruha Benjamin – Associate Professor of African American Studies\, Princeton University. \nThis convening aims to center the racial justice issues raised by modern surveillance technologies such as facial recognition\, predictive policing\, and social media monitoring tools. Through panels and discussion\, this symposium will explore topics such as: \n\nThe deployment of surveillance technologies in the face of well-documented error rates when analyzing communities of color\, and the ways in which their unchecked use threatens to obscure and automate racial inequalities under the guise of unbiased computer systems;\n\n\nThe need to analyze the use of surveillance tools in the context of well-established racial biases in policing\, which has knock-on effects on the criminal justice system;\n\n\nIssues raised by using surveillance technologies in tandem\, such as their exacerbated impact on communities of color and the creation of a pervasive dragnet that is incompatible with a democratic society; and\n\n\nThe different approaches to regulation\, including outright bans (enacted for facial recognition in cities such as San Francisco and Somerville\, MA)\, efforts to pass transparency measures (enacted in cities such as Seattle and Nashville\, TN)\, and the role of inspector general audits (influential reports in Los Angeles and Chicago).”\n\n\n\n\n\n
