SUMMARY:No Going Back: Global Communication & Post-Pandemic Politics | Annenberg School for Communication
DESCRIPTION:On suddenly sparse streets\, artists confront the grim reality of the moment. With a nod to the anti-globalization movement or the music notes seemingly playing off the guest that has overstayed its welcome\, both messages diagnose the ailment and gesture toward a hope for and belief in change. In a moment shaped by closures — of borders\, stores\, schools\, offices\, jobs\, and\, for many\, a dream of “going back to normal” — what openings are made possible? \nThe second biennial early career conference by the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania asks: What are post-pandemic politics? We understand post-pandemic\, not as a myopic focus on COVID-19\, but rather as an optic illuminating both persistent and emergent conditions of inequity and precarity. We also use post-pandemic as an opportunity to imagine new forms of politics\, community\, solidarity\, and action.

SUMMARY:Edgelands Institute Launch Event | Berkman Klein Center
DESCRIPTION:The Edgelands Institute is an interdisciplinary pop-up institute to redraw our social contract in our era of mass-urbanization\, surveillance\, pandemics\, and other emergencies\, currently being incubated at the Berkman Klein Center. \nThe Institute stems from the perception that the rapid deployment of surveillance technologies in cities to provide security services is reshaping how we interact with government\, corporations\, and each other without receiving the attention this transformation deserves. There is an urgent need for an inclusive conversation around how this is affecting our societies. The goal of the institute is to bring together all the concerned parties to find and create common ground. Its mission is to imagine the terms of new social contracts that work for cities and people in the age of pandemics and digital surveillance. \nDuring this launch event\, the institute will introduce its mission\, methodology\, and\, true to its mission\, bring together arts and research for an engaging session. To guide the conversation\, the institute would appreciate it if you could answer a few questions for us on your views about the urban social contract in your city. \n[…]

SUMMARY:Disinformation's Consequences | Shorenstein Center
DESCRIPTION:Event Meta \n end author \n\n Event content \n\nThe consequences of disinformation came into sharp relief in the coordinated and violent attack on the United States Capitol on January 6th.  Social media platforms intensify the speed of misleading communication that promoted lies\, misrepresentations\, and deceptive sourcing to energize groups.  This was a concerted and organized campaign to promote and weaponize misinformation to a large audience. As we reckon with the past several years\, we are left with more questions on how to face the looming and ongoing challenges disinformation poses to democracy. \nJoin us for a conversation with: \n\nDr. Joan Donovan\, Research Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and Public Policy\, Harvard Kennedy School\nRoger McNamee\, Author of the New York Times bestseller Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe\nKara Swisher\, Spring 2021 Fellow\, The University of Chicago Institute of Politics; Host of the Sway and Pivot podcasts; Contributing Writer to The New York Times Opinion Section\nNancy Gibbs (Moderator)\, Director of the Shorenstein Center; Visiting Edward R.
